Indian art makes mega bucks in UK
(Go To Top)

London: A recent sale of modern Indian, Pakistani and Arabic paintings in the UK made an amazing total of 1. 7 million pounds. The sale was held in Bond Street, London, at auctioneers Bonham's, and the record-breaking prices surprised even the many hardened and experienced dealers who were present for the sale. For example, a world record price, 145,000 pounds, was bid for a picture called "The Tree, The Bird, The Shadow" by the Indian artist Jagdish Swaminathan (1928 - 1993), when the pre-auction estimate had been that the painting would sell for no more than something between 40,000 and 60,000 pounds. Another picture, "Horses and Nudes", by another Indian artist, called Maqbol Fid Hussain, who was born in 1915, was expected to raise between 50,000 and 70,000 pounds at most, but, in the end, fetched 89,600 pounds. The third most lucrative sale was of a painting by an artist called Francis Newton Souza. This picture, "Red Portrait", was expected to go for no more than 35,000 pounds tops, but, in the end, was sold for an astonishing 74,000 pounds.

The sale also included a selection of more traditional Islamic art amongst all the more modern efforts, and followed a previous sale at Bonham's of Indian and Islamic pieces late last year, when record prices were also achieved for a number of artists. The head of Indian and Islamic Art at Bonham's is Claire Penhallurick and she was surprised, very enthusiastic about these recent sales. As she said: "What really created the buzz was the modern paintings. It is as if a whole new generation of artists, and new western influenced art, is at last beginning to find a proper market, not just in Britain, but across the world. Buyers for the pictures were a very wide mix." Ms Penhallurick also pointed out that: "The works of some of the best Indian artists went unrecognised for many years. This is now changing rapidly as those works are being reappraised. Now, contemporary paintings that used to sell for a few hundred pounds at most are commanding prices at least five times greater". It looks, then, that sales such as the two recently so successfully carried out at Bonham's are set to become a fixture on the London art scene, which will be great news for a whole raft of South Asian artists.
