And, more astonishingly, the police refused to register the case against the groom and his family. The marriage was fixed by a local panchayat under the Wani custom, which says that if a person is found guilty of having sexual relations with an unmarried girl, the accused's family is required to marry one of its female members to a male member from the victim's family. According to the Daily Times, Mujahid Hussain was married to Kaneez Kubra on April 28, and on the same night he allowed his three friends to gang rape her as revenge. The paper said that at around midnight, the groom's parents informed the girl that the wedding was just an excuse to exact revenge on her brother Majid for outraging the modesty of Mujahid's sister Sumera. Mujahid then invited his three friends, who gang-raped the bride. The next day, Mujahid Hussain took her to the house of his friend Ghulam Mustafa, who also assaulted her. Later, when the girl's father then approached high authorities, the police instituted a case on the orders of the Dera Ghazi Khan district police officer (DPO).

Divorcing parents ignore children's feelings (Go To Top)

Sydney: The trauma of divorce can be reduced when parents know their children's true feelings about the break-up, a new research has revealed. But parents may need to hear the message from a neutral expert who interviews the children and conveys their sentiments, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. Research funded by the federal Attorney-General's Department shows most parents interviewed for the study did not understand their children's perspective. When told what their children had said, "80 per cent learnt new things, and some of them were shocked", according to Jennifer McIntosh, of the Children in Focus Research program at La Trobe University. The ongoing study, based on 150 families and 300 children, is examining the effects of "child inclusive" mediation on couples locked in conflict over children. The research was carried out through Relationships Australia. Preliminary findings are published in the forthcoming Journal of Family Studies. Half the couples involved undergo mediation, in which they are simply urged to consider the impact of parental conflict on children. The other couples undergo "child inclusive" mediation, in which the children's views are conveyed to the parents. The preliminary findings show parents in the "child inclusive" group were more likely to believe the outcomes of mediation to be fairer, that children had benefited, that conflict had decreased, and that arrangements reached were working better three months after mediation. In the other group, men in particular saw little progress. Dr McIntosh said the purpose of interviewing the children was to find out "what it is like to be this child, at this moment" - not necessarily to examine issues such as where the children wanted to live, or how much time they wanted to spend with each parent.
