Mukherjee Commission on Netaji to resume fresh hearing

Kolkata: The Mukherjee Commission, inquiring into the disappearance of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose 60 years ago, will resume its hearing here on June 10 following the extension of its term for another six months. The one-man Commission's Secretary M Roy said today that the Commission would have its next sitting at 11.00 am on June 10 at Mahajati Sadan annexe. The Commission's term had ended on May 13. The Centre gave it an extension of six months on May 5. Earlier, the Supreme Court had dismissed a PIL seeking the extention of the Commission. Dismissing the PIL filed by one Anuj Dhar, the three-judge Bench comprising Chief Justice R C Lahoti, Justice D M Dharmadhikari and Justice G P Mathur had said that the Commission was appointed on April 14, 1999 and was given a six month extension last November. The apex court had asked, "though the mystery has not yet been unravelled, how long can such an inquiry commission go on." The Bench had said that now it is upto the Government of India to take a decision whether or not to give extension to the Commission. The Union Government could take further action on the report as per the Commission of Inquiry Act, the Bench had added. The Union Home Ministry on May five extended the Commission's term for a further period of six months beyond May 14. As per official records, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was killed in a plane crash on August 18, 1945 in Taiwan but the Commission, after visiting the country, found that there was no official records pertaining to any crash in August/September 1845, Vijay Hansaria, counsel for the petitioner had said. Requesting for the extension to the term of the commission the counsel for the petitioner had said that the commission's finding has further given twist in the disappearance theory and if the work of the Commission was wind up abruptly, the mystery would never be unravelled.

Peruvian minister dies at a Bhubaneswar hotel (Go To Top)

New Delhi: The body of Peru's vice minister for mining Juan Carlos Barcellos Milla, who died in a Bhubaneswar hotel, has been sent to his home. Milla, who was on a visit to India for a conference, died in a hotel in Bhubaneshwar on Wednesday (May 25). He was supposed to deliver a lecture on mining in a workshop jointly organised by World Bank, Orissa government and Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) on Wednesday. When Milla did not turn up at the meet, the hotel staff and the delegates checked his room which was locked from inside. When the room was finally opened Milla was found dead sitting in a chair. "He was supposed to lecture at around 11 o'clock. So we waited till 10 o'clock. Then we tried to knock the door but there was no response. Post-mortem examination reports suggest that Milla suffered a cardiac arrest.

Indian, Chinese diplomats to hold talks with Nepal authorities (Go To Top)

Kathmandu: Two senior diplomats from India and China are due in Nepal on Thursday for talks with the authorities. According to the BBC, the visits take place amid a political crisis in the kingdom which is sandwiched between the two influential Asian giants. The authorities have refused to give details of the proposed talks. India condemned the move of King Gyanendra to seize direct control of the country in February but China described it as an "internal matter". Indian foreign ministry official Ranjit Rae and Zhou Gang, a senior official of the Chinese foreign ministry, are both arriving in Kathmandu simultaneously. BBC says that a lot of importance has been attached to the visits from Nepal's influential and much larger neighbours. Rae is the first senior Indian official to visit Nepal since the royal take over in February, which Delhi dubbed "a setback" to democracy. India, along with the US and the UK, subsequently suspended military assistance. But Delhi recently decided to resume military aid which it said was "in the pipeline".

Lord Ram on French shoes (Go To Top)

Paris: After depicting the images of Hindu gods on undergarments, western commercial interests are at work again. A French footwear company has depicted the image of Lord Rama on its latest designer shoes. Angered by the depiction of the image of Lord Rama on its latest designer shoes for women, a little-known French Hindu group is up in arms against Minelli, a France-based shoe retailer's marketing techniques. Hindu Human Rights has asked Minelli to withdraw the shoes from the market and tender an apology for hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus all over the world. The group described the action of the company as "totally devoid of all understanding" of the Hindu religion. It said "on its own, this may seem unimportant to non-Hindus, but Lord Rama was so venerated that during the span of his forest exile, his footwear was placed as his substitute on the throne at Ayodhya." The group urged the French government to seriously look into "discrimination against Hindus and Hinduism" and take steps to rectify the situation. Describing France as a country "that has had trouble even recognizing Hinduism" as a "valid religion", the nondescript organisation has also cited anti-Hindu bias in the French educational and media establishments. Earlier it was an American online store selling women's undergarments featuring images of Hindu gods and a web site offending the Sikh community by displaying a range of thongs with the 'Khanda' emblem representing the four pillars of the Sikh faith.
