PM releases UPA's first report card (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today released a report of the working of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government during the last one year. The report titled "Caring Government ", which was released by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi at a gathering attended by the Union Council of Ministers and leaders of the coalition, but marked by the absence of Left leaders. In her opening address, Sonia Gandhi took a dig at the opposition, which she said was "yet to accept that people have rejected them convincingly". She said Dr. Manmohan Singh has given a dignified and effective leadership and enhanced India's prestige abroad. Mrs. Gandhi said the coalition has proved that while diverse political parties could, without compromising their ideological stands, pursue larger national interests.

The report highlighted the achievements of the government during the past one year. In his speech marked by profuse praise for Sonia Gandhi, Dr. Manmohan Singh said generations will remember the "marvel of Sonia Gandhi's renunciation of the seat of power". Dr. Singh thanked leaders of alliance partners including DMK leader M. Karunanidhi, RJD leader Lalu Yadav, LJP leader Ramvilas Paswan and Left leaders, including Harkishan Singh Surjeet, Prakash Karat, Jyoti Basu and AB Bardhan. The Prime Minister said that education and health care would remain his government's top priority in the second year of governance. In a simple ceremony inside the Prime Minister's Office which was telecast live on Doordarshan, the Prime Minister said that the goals set for the second year were in fact for the next four years and perhaps one decade.

Emphasising the UPA government's slogan of "Bharat Nirman", Singh said that this would transform Rural India in the next four years. He said a special focus would be laid on removing disparities in income and involving every individual in the development process. Prime Minister said that his government would have to act "out of the box" to change the present standard of living of the countrymen. He also called for protection of the interests of the workers in unorganised sector. Singh said that the condition of SCs, STs minorities and the women would have to be improved for overall growth and development. The gender bias in the society will also have to be removed, he added. Manmohan said that the biggest challenge before his government was to flourish in the globalised world order.

LJP rebels claim majority to form Govt in Bihar (Go To Top)

Jameshedpur/Patna/New Delhi: Rebel legislators of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) on Sunday claimed that they have the numbers to form a government in Bihar with the help of allies. The rebel legislators, who were taken to a secure resort near Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, have now been moved to an undisclosed location. On Saturday, LJP leader Nagmani quit the party but party president and Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan wrote it off as a trivial matter. Speculation has been rife Paswan is facing revolt from about 13 of his 29 party legislators in Bihar assembly as he failed to help form a government in the state and end the political stalemate since an inconclusive February poll. One of the rebel legislators, Janak Singh, spoke to the media, indicating that Nagmani is not an isolated dissident and that the fissures within the LJP run deeper than Paswan has made out to be. "We are not under anybody's pressure. We are all together and we are going to form a government in Bihar, which will run for complete five years. We have a majority," Singh said. Paswan supporters were making desperate attempts to keep their flock of legislators intact. Four LJP legislators were flown from Patna to New Delhi to meet Paswan. "All the legislators are with us. Some of them have gone to have a vacation. We are not forcing anybody," said Pashupati Paras, an LJP legislator. "We are going to meet the party chief. He will decide what next to do be done," said Suraj Bhan, a lawmaker of the party, who was escorting the legislators on the special flight. Paswan tried to put up a brave face, taking umbrage in the recently toughened anti-defection law, which disqualify any legislator who defects regardless of numbers. "Our party has not split. No party has a majority. When the government is formed and as our party has not split then a whip will be issued which has to be abided by all," he told reporters after a meeting in New Delhi. Earlier, Central rule was imposed in Bihar in March after feuding parties failed to cobble together a majority following an inconclusive state poll.
