Detox diets are not good for health (Go To Top)

Washington: A new study published in the latest issue of Food Technology magazine suggests that detoxifying diets claiming to cleanse, rejuvenate, revitalize or in some other way restore our bodies are not medically or scientifically valid, but rather may mask symptoms or delay diagnosis of illness. The team led by Clemens and Pressman found that healthy adults may feel better and more energetic after a detox diet as a result of simplifying what may have been a poor diet. "The suggestion that our bodies' elimination of harmful substances is enhanced due to a detox diet is categorically unsubstantiated. It runs counter to our understanding of human physiology and biochemistry," Clemens added. "The results reflect a change in their energy balance, burning more calories than they ingest. It's not the elimination of toxins. Healthy adults, even overweight adults, have extraordinary systems for eliminating waste and regulating body chemistry. The liver, kidneys, gut and immune system effectively eliminate or neutralize toxic substances within hours of eating or drinking," Pressman added.

Drinking too much water can kill you (Go To Top)

Washington: A new study published in the Institute of Food Technologists magazine suggests that when exercising for long durations, drinking too much water and neglecting important nutrients can lead toward a dangerous chemical imbalance, even death. The Team led by Roger A. Clemens and Peter Pressman found that too much water in combination with too little sodium is a serious health risk. "Health professionals are observing that physically active people must be made aware that drinking water in extreme can cause sodium levels in the blood to fall below normal, a condition called hyponatremia," Clemens added. Symptoms of severe hyponatremia typically include lethargy, confusion, agitation, even seizures. Unfortunately, these symptoms may be mistaken for signs of dehydration at a time when more water is the very last thing the body needs. "It's important to note that hyponatremia is a clinically important concern even among typically healthy people. The risk is significant among healthy endurance athletes, and even weekend athletes performing low-intensity exercise in warm weather," Pressman said. "The significance of maintaining the proper balance of water and electrolytes-especially sodium-in the body's tissues cannot be understated to those involved in prolonged physical activity," he added.

Marathi films in Maharashtrian multiplexes (Go To Top)

Mumbai: 'Shwaas' gave Marathi films a new lease of life; the Maharashtra government made it mandatory for multiplexes to screen Marathi films. Yet, Gautam Joglekar's new film 'Pak Pak Pakak' finds it difficult to compete with Hindi films. Joglekar is not the only one. About 20 Marathi filmmakers are working round the clock to ensure their film gets a 'proper release', but it seems like the battle is half lost. Multiplexes are reluctant to screen their films, since they think Maharashtrians won't shell out the moolah to buy high priced tickets. Some of the films ready for release are 'Hirwa Shaalu', 'Manthan', 'Mee Tujhich Tujhi', 'Sawali Premachi', and 'Rahile Ghar Door Maaze'. The producer of an unreleased Marathi film complains that he cant locate a single suitable theatre for his films release. Meanwhile, over 54 Marathi films are waiting to be assessed by the Government, but with the domination of Hindi films flooding the markets with their prints to make the most in the first week of release, there is very little hope for Marathi films.
