10 get life for role in Bhagalpur communal riots

     Ranchi: A local court has sentenced ten people to life imprisonment in a case related to the infamous communal riots in Bhagalpur in 1989 in which over 1000 people were killed. Additional district and sessions judge Navneet Kumar Sinha, who had convicted these people on May 9, announced the sentence on Thursday. Thirteen other accused in the case were acquitted. The convicted are charged with being involved in the killing of five persons at Kamarganj village under Sultanganj police station on October 14, 1989. A case was registered against the accused on the basis of a complaint of one Badrul Islam. Those awarded life imprisonment are Dhruv Bhagat, Jaijai Yadav, Tarkeshwar Yadav, Ramvilas Yadav, Harikishore Yadav, Nero Yadav, Siyaram Yadav, Rajkishore Yadav, Arun Mandal and Saryu Mandal.

Delhi meningitis death toll 18 (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: A 95-year-old woman died in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) of bacterial meningitis taking the death toll since the outbreak of the disease a week ago to 18 and city hospitals reported 36 new admissions. The woman from Kalkaji in South Delhi, Raj Kaushalya, died, said Municipal Corporation of Delhi's hospital administration chief Dr J N Banvalikar. With 36 more patients showing up in hospitals, the number of people admitted with suspected meningococcal infection has risen to 162, he said. The 18 deaths have been reported from Lok Nayak Jaipraksh Narain Hospital (7), Hind Rao Hospital (4), AIIMS (3), Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital (2) and Bhagwan Mahavir Hospital and Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital (1 each).

Manipur doctors go on strike after doctor's kidnapping (Go To Top)

     Imphal: Manipur's medical community has declared an indefinite strike after a doctor of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, (RIMS) Imphal was kidnapped by unidentified persons of the Human Rights Protection Guild (HRPG). Dr Yumnam Nandabir Singh of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the RIMS was abductedon May 9 from his residence in Porompat, Imphal East. The incident took place near the TV tower station. The strike call was given after RIMS Director L.Fimate received a call reportedly from the HRPG, asking for a ransom of Rs.30 lakh if the hospital wanted Dr. Nandabir Singh released safely. Dr.Fimate, however, ruled out paying the ransom amount, on the plea that no such funds were available with the hospital. Appealing to the kidnappers to release Dr. Nandabir Singh on humanitarian grounds, as his worried had been without food or sleep since May 9, Dr. Fimate said that doctors were servants of the people and not a monied segment of society, as has been projected in the past. Meanwhile, the Manipur branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), held an emergency meeting on Wednesday at IMA House in Lamphel, and strongly condemned the kidnapping of Dr. Nandabir Singh.

Surface-to-surface missile Prithvi test-fired (Go To Top)

     Chandipur-on-sea (Orissa): Prithvi, India's indigenous surface-to-surface medium range missile, was test fired today from the integrated test range (ITR) here, 15 km from Balasore. According to the scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), it was a user's trail. The missile was launched from a mobile tatra transporter erecter launcher at 1.04 pm, said the sources. Prithvi has a range of 150 to 250 km and its P-I version has already been operationalised and delivered to the Army. It is under regular production now. The naval version, called Dhanush, has a range of 250 km. It can deliver a warhead of about 500 kg. The Army version can travel over 150 km, with a warhead that can weigh up to one tonne. Prithvi can be used in smashing airport and prevent aircraft from landing. Prithvi forms part of the DRDO's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). The IGMDP's other constituents are the Agni series of surface-to-surface missiles; Trishul which is a surface-to-air missile; Akash, surface-to-air missile and Nag, the anti-tank missile.

Dalai Lama opens monastery in Kullu (Go To Top)

     Kullu (Himachal Pradesh): Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Wednesday opened a monastery in India's northern Kullu town, built to commemorate an ancient monastery destroyed in Tibet after the Chinese invasion. The Dagpo Shedrupling monastery, founded in Tibet's Dagpo region during the 15th century was destroyed in 1959 during the Chinese invasion. A few who escaped have been living in northern Himachal Pradesh since then. The Dalai Lama conducted prayers and blessed the new monastery. A huge foreign delegation also attended the prayer ceremony. "Monastery is supposed to day and night repeat the teachings of Buddha. Sometimes we have open teachings of his Holiness," said Rosemary Patton, who is leading the 180-member delegation. The Dalai Lama, who fled to India in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule has headed a Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh. The spiritual leader has maintained that he only wants greater autonomy for the Tibetan people.
