Stress is the key to longevity (Go To Top)

London: In a new revelation, researchers at an an anti-ageing conference in London have reaveled that short bursts of stress can help people stay young. According to The Telgraph, Dr Marios Kyriazis who led the conference said that such exposure to stress will prolong life and help prevent chronic illnesses such as arthritis, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Kyriazis, the medical director of the British Longevity Society, argued that moderate stress increased the production of proteins that help to repair the body's cells, including brain cells, enabling them to work at peak capacity. "Research shows that cells subjected to stress repair themselves, allowing us to live longer. As the body ages, this self-repair mechanism starts to slow down. The best way to keep the process working efficiently is to 'exercise it', in the same way that you would exercise your muscles to keep them strong," he added. Other stressful activities he recommended included giving a best man's speech, following the instruction manual for a new DVD recorder, volunteering to help at a youth club and redecorating a room over a weekend.

A malt peg or two keeps cancer away (Go To Top)

London: A leading drinks industry consultant has claimed that drinking malt whisky might help prevent cancer. "There has been much in the news about the health benefits of antioxidants in red wine. By contrast, very little has been said about malt whisky distillery science. However, research has shown that there are even greater health benefits to people who drink single malt whiskies. Why? Single malt whiskies have more ellagic acid than red wine," The Telegraph quoted Dr Jim Swan, as saying at the EuroMedLab conference in Glasgow, Scotland. Ellagic acid, Dr.Swan said had the potency to absorb rogue cells in the human body. Dr Lesley Walker of Cancer Research UK, however, was not too enthused by Dr. Swan's views, saying that she was "very concerned" abouth whisky being promoted as a cancer prevention agent without verifiable data to support the claim. "Ellagic acid is a powerful antioxidant, but that does not mean it is necessary to hit the bottle. There is an abundance of this acid in soft fruits and the charity suggests this as a much healthier way of increasing antioxidant intake," she said.
