Pataudi granted bail by Jhajjar court (Go To Top)

Jhajjar (Haryana): Former Indian cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, who was in police remand for two days in connection with a black buck poaching case, has been granted bail. Pataudi's appearance in court, however, was preceded by a health scare when he had to be admitted to the Jhajjar Civil Hospital this morning after he complained of chest pain. Pataudi was admitted to hospital at around 9:30 a.m. Jhajjar's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Hanif Qureshi said. After his medical check-up, Pataudi was taken to the court and was granted bail. Chief Judicial Magistrate Sudhir Jiwan granted bail to Pataudi on a surety of Rs 50,000. Meanwhile, the killing of the black buck by Pataudi has led Bhopal's Majlis-e-Shoora to expel him from the community. "People like Mansoor Ali Khan are a blot on our community and we do not consider him as a member of our community. We have expelled him from our community," said Ausaf Shahmiri Khurram, president, All India Muslim Tyohar Committee. The members also raised slogans against Pataudi.

Earlier, Pataudi was brought to his Delhi residence from where the Registration Certificate (RC) of the Maruti Gypsy allegedly used in the hunting was recovered. After having spent two days in police remand following his surrender before a Jhajjar court on Saturday, Pataudi was to be presented in court where his bail plea was to come up for hearing again today Earlier on Sunday, before he was produced in the court, Pataudi underwent a customary medical check up in the Jhajjar Civil Hospital. Chief Judicial Magistrate Sudhir Jiwan extended Pataudi's remand by a day on prosecution's plea that the registration book of the vehicle used in the crime was yet to be recovered. Jhajjar Police have already seized Pataudi's vehicle from his Delhi residence. The Court has also allowed the Wildlife Trust of India and Peoples for Animal counsels to assist the prosecution in the case. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had already dismissed the anticipatory bail pleas of Pataudi and his co-accused Shashi Singh. An FIR was registered against Pataudi and seven others on June 5, after police recovered the carcasses of black buck and two rabbits from the vehicle in which they were travelling. Poaching a black buck, once common in northern and central India, is a crime as serious as killing a tiger and punishable by up to seven years in jail or a 25,000 rupees fine. Pataudi had surrendered in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Sudhir Jiwan on Saturday after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Among the seven accused in the case evading arrest, he is the only person to have surrendered so far.

On Friday, the Haryana Police had decided to constitute more teams and intensify raids to apprehend Pataudi and his co-accused in the black buck poaching case in the event of him deciding not to surrender before the law. Jhajjar Police Chief Hanief Qureshi had then said that the police had constituted three teams, all of whom were conducting raids at Pataudi's possible hideouts in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Gurgaon. Saturday's surrender came after Punjab and Haryana High Court Vacation Judge Rajive Bhalla rejected Pataudi's plea for anticipatory bail. Vacation Judge Justice Rajive Bhalla also dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of Pataudi's co-accused Shashi Singh after hearing the arguments from a battery of lawyers representing them, the state of Haryana, Wildlife Trust of India, All India Bishnoi Mahasabha and Peoples for Animals for over two hours.
