Patna doctors on strike for security

Patna: The junior doctors in the Patna's Medical College Hospital have gone on indefinite strike demanding proper security for them. Sources said that nearly 300 Junior doctors went on strike on Wednesday after a scuffle between doctors and a person accompanying a patient in Gynecology ward. "We are very angry. Nothing is being done for our security. We want the senior doctors to give in their resignation," said Dr Gauhar Alam, president, Junior Doctors Association. Doctors burnt a vehicle on the campus and are now demanding more security. Most of the patients have either been shifted to private nursing homes or have left for other hospitals. But these are the poor people who are suffering most because they can not afford treatment outside. "What can we do. We are really poor. There is no option," said an attendant, whose relative is undergoing treatment.

Left calls nation-wide protest over fuel price on June 28 (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Leaders of various Left parties, which are giving outside support the UPA government led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday expressed their dismay and anger over the government's decision to go ahead with the fuel price hike, and said that they would be organising nation-wide demonstrations against the move on June 28. Demanding a reversal of the decision, the CPI(M), CPI, RSP and the Forward Bloc said in a joint statement in New Delhi, "We call upon the people all over the country to join together to register their strong protest by coming out into the streets and demonstrate their opposition on 28th June." "The Left parties call upon the government to reverse their decision and take the measures which can absorb the burden of the increased international oil prices," they added. Maintaining that the government's justification for hiking the prices of petrol and diesel was "misplaced", the parties said it was "unfortunate" that it had not taken up the alternatives made by them to avert the price hike. Among the suggestions given in this regard were: cancellation of additional cess of 50 paise per litre of petrol for highways, making changes in the excise duty pattern so that it did not lead to retail price hike and doing away with import parity in product price. The Left parties had suggested the creation of a price stabilisation fund to meet global fluctuation in crude prices with the cess collected on indigenous crude amounting to Rs 5,400 crore per annum. They had also sought a review of the duty drawback payment to petro product exporters by private refineries.

Govt clears fuel price hike, as petrol pump dealers go on strike (Go To Top)

New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) which met in the capital on Monday morning has decided to hike the price of petrol and diesel by Rs. 2.50 and Rs.2.00 per litre, respectively. However, the CCEA has decided that there will be no change in LPG or kerosene prices. "The Cabinet has had a one-hour long discussion. It has arrived at a decision. You will know about it shortly," officials told reporters after the meeting. Meanwhile, petrol pumps across the country began a day-long strike to protest the 'non-implementation' of the accord signed between them and the government nearly four years back, even as the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs is scheduled to meet today to discuss among other issues the increase in petrol and diesel prices in the backdrop of Left's strong opposition to the move. Petroleum dealers also threatened to go on an indefinite strike from July 18 if the government fails to implement the accord and enhance their commission from the prevailing 1.59 percent to 5.0 percent. The terms and conditions of the accord were reached in August 2001, claimed Saran Sarna, the president of the Delhi Petrol Dealers Association (DPDA).

Last Thursday, the Union Cabinet had informally agreed on the need to raise fuel prices, but deferred on taking a final decision pending Left parties' approval. Left leaders met UPA government leaders on Sunday in which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Finance Minister P Chidambaram were present. But when asked if petroleum prices hike was discussed, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury had then replied in the negative. Officials said though petrol and diesel prices warrant a hike of Rs 4.5 and Rs 5 per litre on account of spurt in international crude oil prices and rise in tax rates, government may settle for a hike of about Rs 2 each to limit the impact on the common man.
