Train blast near Jaunpur: 7 dead, 22 injured
by Ajay Kumar

Patna: Seven persons were reportedly killed and 22 injured due to an explosion in a general coach (second from engine) of Delhi-bound Sharamjeevi Express (2391) at 5.30 pm today between Harpal Ganj and Koiripur station in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The train was on the run from Rajgir to New Delhi via Patna and Mughalsarai. Two powerful blasts reportedly occurred near the toilet of the general compartment of the train when it was about 30 kms away from Jaunpur. Railway authorities, however, have confirmed only one explosion. In Patna, Union Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad Yadav, while leaving for the place of incident, said, "the explosion may have occurred due to any cylinder blast instead of any bomb . The exact reason is yet to be confirmed. So far, one person has died and 22 people are injured." The injured have been taken to Badlapur hospital near Jaunpur. Railway doctors from Lucknow, Faizabad, Varanasi and Mugalsarai have already left for the site, stated a release from the Press Information Bureau. Lalu further said that senior officials have rushed to the site of the blast. Meanwhile, the Minister also informed, "22 bombs were found in a suitcase in a Gaya to Dhanbad passenger train. Four persons have been detained in this connection." When asked about whether the blasts were targeted on Bihar trains, Lalu said that don't jump to miscalculated conclusions. There is no question of Bihar angle in this incident, it must be the handiwork of miscreants, said he. He also said that the incident will definitely be probed to find out the exact cause of blast.

Mahatma's grandson's book on Partition (Go To Top)

Lahore: Mahatma Gandhi's grandson, Rajmohan Gandhi is writing a book on the Partition. Rajmohan, who along with his wife Usha came to Lahore on a private visit to Pakistan said that the book will explore the various aspects of the Partition and look into the human elements of emotion, trauma, fear and the like, that accompany such tragic events. A visiting professor at the University of Illinois, Rajmohan said that the objective of their visit to Lahore was the start the first phase of the book by collecting the accounts of the survivors of the Partition. "The objective of our visit to Lahore from July 16 to 25 was to start the first phase of our book by collecting the stories of survivors of Partition and finding elements of humanity in the tragedy. The Partition was gruesome beyond comprehension, in some cases dramatically, in other cases fleetingly," the Daily Times quoted him as saying. "But we believe that there was some humanity amid all the trauma. According to our information, there were instances where people from both sides were sympathetic towards each other during the tragedy, and the book will be a recollection of these specific incidents, regardless of the narrators' religious beliefs," he added. The couple have so far interviewed around 25 people, including retired Pakistan armed forces officials, Pakistan Railways officers, engineers, doctors and policemen, from different places like Rawalpindi, Attock, Gujrat, Gujranwala and Lahore, all of whom had connections to Indian cities like Jullandhar, Hoshiarpur and New Delhi before Partition. "One of the oldest person interviewed was a former member of the Pakistan armed forces, who remembered a number of such incidents," Rajamohan further added.

Ram temple will come up on disputed Ayodhya site: Advani  (Go To Top)
by Kamna Mathur/ Satyanarain

Lucknow/ Rae Bareli: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian Parliament) L.K.Advani reiterated on Thursday that the controversial Ram Temple would be constructed on the disputed site of the razed Babri Mosque in the near future, according to Hindu sentiments. Talking to reporters in Lucknow before proceeding to Rae Bareli along with senior leaders Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti to depose before a special CBI court in connection with the 1992 Babri Mosque demolition case., Advani said: "We are going to depose before the court, it is reminding us of that day. I am happy. Millions of people want that the temple should be constructed at the site and it will happen." More than a decade after demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya, charges were framed against Advani and seven others accused in the case by the special court in Rae Bareli. Special Judicial Magistrate V K Singh read out the charges against each of the accused in a packed court room and fixed August 30 as the next date of hearing in the matter. All the accused, including senior BJP leaders Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti and Vinay Katiyar, VHP leaders Ashok Singhal, Giriraj Kishore, Vishnu Hari Dalmiya and Sadhvi Rithambara, were present in the court with their lawyers when the charges were read out. The judge explained the charges to the accused persons under sections 147, 153(a), 149, 153 (B) and section 505 of the Indian Penal Code. All the accused pleaded "not guilty" and claimed to be tried after which the court posted the matter for further hearing next month. The court also directed the accused to file a personal bond of Rs 10,000 each, which was complied.

Earlier, a special Central Bureau of Investigation court had dropped the proceedings against the three leaders and 21 others saying the "legal defect" in the government notification establishing the court was rectified. However the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court recently set aside the special court's verdict and directed that fresh charges be framed against Advani and others. Joshi said he was confident that they would be exonerated in due course of time. "We have been called as some charges are against us. We will listen to those charges and tell the people how wrong they are," Joshi said. Hindu zealots demolished the 16th century Babri mosque in Ayodhya on December 2, 1992 leading to the worst-ever communal clashes in the country. Hindus believe the Babri Mosque was built on the ruins of a temple dedicated to the mythological King Ram. Muslims want the mosque rebuilt. When trial was being held before the special court, intervention by the Allahabad high court in February last year gave a new direction to the case. The High Court set aside the notification, issued by the government in October 1993 to set up a special trial court. In all, 49 persons were charged for being directly or indirectly involved in the demolition of the Babri mosque. However, two criminal cases were registered against eight prominent political leaders belonging to the BJP and its ideological ally, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad or the World Hindu Council and another 41 people.
