10-year-old kidnapped in Patna

Patna: In yet another kidnapping incident in Bihar, the son of an IRCON engineer based in Patna has disappeared. The family says they have no news about 10-year-old Anand, who has been declared missing since July 16. BB Singh, Anand's father, who is an engineer with IRCON, a subsidiary of the Indian railways, suspects that Anand has been kidnapped for ransom. "He left home to play. He usually comes home by 7 p.m., but when I came back from office he had still not returned. After I had my bath, it was 11 p.m. and he was still missing. Then I filed a complaint with the police," said Singh. So far the family has not received any ransom calls but the police have formed a special team to look for Anand. "A special team has been formed for the investigation. We will try our best to find him and catch the people who kidnapped him," said N H Khan, Senior Superintendent of Police, Patna. Anand's possible kidnapping is yet another case in Bihar. At least six kidnappings have taken place in the state in the last two weeks alone with four still missing.

by Rajiv Kimta

Malama (Himachal Pradesh): Incessant rains over the past two weeks have taken their toll on hydel power projects in Himachal Pradesh, which have been shut due to high silt content. Last month, the mammoth 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri was shut after fears of flash floods from a rising artificial lake in Tibet and now Malama project has been temporarily shut, affecting the electricity supply in northern grid. Major hydel projects in the state including Bhakra Nangal, provide power supply to northern states including Delhi, Rajasthan, Harayana and Punjab. Officials say the silt levels have dramatically risen up to 7,000 ppm in the past week, as a result of continuous rains in the upper reaches, and melting of snow.

Kannada film Shanthi enters Guinness book of world records (Go To Top)
by Kestur G. Vasuki

Kolkata: A Kannada feature film, Shanthi, which was released in 2004 and addressed the issues of terrorism and peace and having only one character throughout the film, has ?earned the remarkable distinction of getting into the Guinness book of world records under the category of "fewest actors in a narrative film". According to certificate of communiqui issued by the Guinness World Records the earlier films in this category included Yaadein(1964) written, directed and produced by Sunil Dutt, who was also its only actor and La Derniere Lettre, a French film starring Catherine Samie and Directed by Frederick Wiseman and now Shanthi from India, starring Bhavanaa and written and Directed by Baraguru Ramachandrappa has now entered the Guinness Book of World records for having a single character in the entire film. Talking to ANI the actress Bhavanaa, who was the only cast member, said that it was tough to act in a single role film expressing multi-dimensional emotions. "There is no other person to express anything or to understand any of your feelings or emotional output. So you have to imagine that this is a kind of character which is conversing or interacting with you. This is what I had to imagine and express. Especially, when it comes to phone conversations, you really don't know.

Normally, in movies, when a telephone conversation is being shown, the person is shown when he is talking and you are shown when you are talking. But, here, I had to express both sides of the conversation," said Bhavanaa. The film conceived, directed and scripted by professor Baraguru Ramachandrappa, a well-known Kannada writer and director. Earlier, he has also created one more record by making a feature film only with songs. Baraguru feels Shanthi was created to tell the world the influences of terrorism and peace which always go together using symbols and surrealism. He says Shanthi was an experiment using a single character in a full length Kannada film to disseminate the message. "I used to do so many experiments which are challenging to the process of creativity. So when I took this subject Shanthi, I decided to do it with a single artist. Doing a film with a single artist is challenging to write the script and direct the film, that too a full length feature film. It is in my nature to receive and invite challenges with regard to creativity. There is only one artist who has to express everything, that's why I did this film through the technique of symbolism and surrealism,"said Baraguru Ramachandrappa.

Produced by Ramesh Yadav, the film has been made with budget of Rs. 25 lakhs. The film-makers have faced a lot of problems in getting in the theatre owners to screen this film. They take the films entry in the Guinness Book of world records as a sure bet to see the film being screened in theatres across India. In the history of Kannada films, this is the first film to enter ?the Guinness Book of Records whereas, in the history of Indian cinema, this is the second film. The Kannada Film Industry deals with movies in the Kannada language and related topics. Despite not being as popular or well known as Bollywood and Kollywood, Kannada films have a significant share of Southern Indian films and also a component of the Cinema of India. Last month, the Kannada film industry had imposed a ban on the release of non-Kannada films in Karnataka until seven weeks after their release elsewhere. The decision was taken to save the Kannada film industry, which is suffering huge losses as audiences seem to prefer Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films. Responding to this move, the Telugu, Tamil and Hindi film industries decided to hit back with restrictions on the release of non-Kannada films in Karnataka. At a meeting the representatives of three film industries decided to launch a war of non-cooperation on the Kannada film industry. Now under an embargo, artistes from the rest of the country will not act in Kannada films, artistes from Kannada films will not be taken in non-Kannada films and raw material like negatives for films will not be supplied.

Mumbai police collect sample of Aishwarya's voice (Go To Top)

Mumbai: The Mumbai police have reportedly collected a voice sample of Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai to find out the authenticity of the audio tape in which actor Salman Khan flaunted his alleged underworld links while purportedly conversing with the actress. A Crime Branch team reached Aishwarya's house in suburban Bandra this morning and recorded her statement, while experts recorded a voice sample, sources close to Rai said. Salman was on Sunday summoned to the Crime Branch office in Andheri, where his statement and voice sample was also recorded. Although sources close to the actress said that the police team had recorded her statement and taken a voice sample, DCP Dhananjay Kamalakar of Mumbai's Crime Branch denied that there was any such move. However, Police Commissioner, A N Roy said that the police would take her voice sample and record Rai's statement during the day. The audio tape, released by television channels and whose transcripts were published by a newspaper, claims voices of those of Salman and Aishwarya conversing with each other. In the tape, Khan not only flaunts his connection with the underworld, but also threatens that the underworld figures would "eliminate" Rai and her family if he so desired.
