AP Government demands CBI probe in Volkswagen scam

     Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh government has requested the Centre today to initiate a CBI probe into the Volkswagen deal, which caused a loss of Rs 29 crore to the state exchequer. The central bureau of investigation will investigate the controversial investment in which Rs 11 crore were deposited into the account of a firm Vashista Wahan, claiming to be the Indian arm of German car firm VolkesWagen. The government had paid 2.5 million dollars and promised to pay another 3.5 million dollars to the company which was incorporated only a few days ago and which had a share capital of only Rs100, 000. Facing a series of attack by opposition party, Chief Minister Y S Raja Sekhar Reddy has today announced in a press conference that the government had requested the CBI probe into the deal. "We have requested the Centre to rope in CBI to investigate into the whole affair,"the Chief Minister said. The TDP has accused the Congress government for corruption in its negotiations with the German firm to set up a car- manufacturing unit in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam.

Sonia Gandhi to attend Clinton's global meet (Go To Top)

     New York: Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance is going to participate in the first global initiative taken by US President Bill Clinton to be held from September 14-16. Many other leaders from different countries are also likely to attend this meet. The meet will address the challenges being faced in four major areas -- poverty, religion, climate change and governance. Among other important guests will be French President Jacques Chirac, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Nigerian President Olusengun Obasanjo and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who will be attending it. Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) will coincide with world leaders' summit at the United Nation (UN) to consider reforms to the world body and progress in the achievement of Millennium Goals. The summit seeks to greatly reduce or eliminate several social and economic ills by 2015. The Initiative will focus on four themes---How to reduce poverty while using religion as a force for reconciliation and conflict resolution,implementing new business strategies and technologies to combat climate change and strengthening governance. During the CGI summit, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will also be in New York. Diplomats are worried that the proposed Clinton event might overshadow the summit with the reform process of the world body, including expansion of the Security Council, already facing rough phase.

Mastermind behind 7/7 attacks identified: Report (Go To Top)

     London: London Police today claimed to have identified Mohammad Sidique Khan, as the mastermind behind the 7/7 suicide attacks. Khan, a 30-year-old teacher of Pakistani origin at a Beeston school, is also thought to be the one who triggered the bomb at Edgware Road Underground station. The Times reported, that security sources believe that Khan has also been involved in previous terrorist operations and had links with al-Qaeda followers in the US. They also believe that he met the other bombers in Leeds, and identified targets on the Tube. Security chiefs say that he is also likely to have taught the other bombers as to how to trigger their rucksack bombs at the same time. The British-born man reportedly arrived at a port last month, and is understood to have left the country the day before four suicide bombers killed around 52 people, in what is being described as first suicide bomb attacks in the country. According to the paper,Khan, the father of a 14-month-old daughter, taught the children of immigrant families who had just arrived in Britain. His colleagues described him as soft spoken, endlessly patient, and immensely popular, with children treating him as their friend.

UK team coming to Pakistan to probe bombers' links (Go To Top)

     Islamabad: A UK team would be arriving in Pakistan to investigate the links of the four suspected suicide bombers of Pakistani origin who carried out the 7/7 serial bomb blasts in London, killing more than 50 people. The Pakistan administration is learnt to have assured all possible help to the British investigating team, which is expected to reach Islamabad sometime next week. The News quoted British High Commissioner in Pakistan Mark J Lyall Grant as saying, that Islamabad has been fully cooperative with the UK in dealing with the investigations of acts of terror, that rocked London on Thursday. Grant, however, expressed ignorance about any investigating team reaching Islamabad. "I had no specific information about it till the afternoon when I returned from my office," he added. Meanwhile, the paper said that British diplomatic sources are being careful before directly blaming Pakistan for the blasts, and are presently focussing only on the four Britons of Pakistan's origin. "We are very careful in expressing our view and we are not prepared to jump to the conclusions in haste on any count," the paper quoted them as saying.
