Srinagar-Jammu highway opens for one-way traffic

     Jammu: The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway is now worthy enough for one way traffic and nearly 1700 vehicles carrying essential goods were allowed to move towards the Srinagar valley. "The highway is open for one-way traffic. Today, 1,700 goods carriers were allowed to move from Jammu and other places towards Srinagar where there has been shortage of several essential supplies amid the harsh cold. The government has decided to provide them with these supplies on need basis", a top official said. According to him, vehicular traffic in one direction started from Sunday evening and all the stranded vehicles have been cleared from the highway on Monday. The Highway was closed down due to heavy rain and snowfall in the area and nearly 4,800 passengers and over 900 vehicles were stranded on the highway since February 7. The main link between Srinagar and Jammu, 2.4 km long Jawahar tunnel was under 10 feet deep snowfall and could be cleared only on Sunday. Boarder Road Organisation said that two-way traffic would ply from this evening. "We are hopeful that the road would be open for traffic between Srinagar and Jammu by this evening", said Chief Engineer, Project Beacon of BRO, Brig. S S Dasaka.

Parrikar challenges dismissal in SC (Go To Top)

     New Delhi: Former Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday moved the Supreme Court challenging the legality of Governor SC Jamir's decision to dismiss his government within hours of it winning a controversial trust vote in the Assembly on February 2. Narrating the sequence of events that unfolded on February 2 on the floor of the House, the petitioner sought to question the basis on which the Governor took the decision to dismiss his government. Parrikar said that the proceedings of the House could not have reached Jamir so fast that he could take an independent and impartial view on the matter. In the light of the events of February 2, Parrikar accused Jamir of indulging in a "colourable exercise" of constitutional powers. Meanwhile, another petition has been filed by Krishna Murari Pandit, a resident of Goa, challenging Jamir's action.This petition is likely to come up for hearing before the apex court on Tuesday.

Indo-Nepal border in Bihar sealed ahead of Tuesday's polls (Go To Top)

     Patna: Around 114 km of the Indo-Nepal border in Bihar has been sealed to thwart unwanted elements, particularly the rebel Maoists of the Himalayan kingdom, from crossing the border to disrupt the second phase of assembly polls in Bihar. Bihar's Chief Secretary K A H Subramanian told reporters here on Monday that a shoot-at-sight order has been passed against booth- grabbers. He also said that aerial surveillance of Naxal-hit areas would be carried out while the polls are in progress. Subramanian said that unprecedented security arrangements were in place to conduct a free and fair election and nearly 325 companies of Para-military forces have been deployed in different constituencies. Apart from 75 companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), 115 companies of the Border Security Force (BSF) have also been deployed across the constituencies going to polls on Tuesday. Eighty-five companies of the Special Task Force (STF) of the Bihar police have also been pressed into service. Nearly 1.8 crore voters in the state will be eligible to exercise their franchise in Tuesday's polls featuring 1000 candidates for 83 constituencies.
