Nepal headed for civil war: Think tank (Go To Top)

London: A Brussels-based think tank has warned that Nepal may be teetering on the brink of a civil war, following last Tuesday's decision by King Gyanendra to sack the Sher Bahadur Deuba government. According to the International Crisis Group (ICG), the existing political dynamics in Nepal will strengthen the nine-year-old Maoist insurgency in that country. "King Gyanendra justified his coup on the need to beat back the Maoists, but it will have exactly the opposite effect. An absolute monarch undermining democracy will only aid the Maoists and do nothing to reduce the risk of them coming to power," ICG President and former Australian Foreign Minister Gareth Evans said in the report entitled 'Nepal's Royal Coup: Making a Bad Situation Worse'. Gyanendra, the report further goes on to say, has pushed himself into a corner, and that a solution to the present crisis is dependent on a combination of political will and effective military action.
