Dacoits terrorise village in Uttar Pradesh

Chamarua (UP): Terror has gripped the tiny Bah village in Uttar Pradesh after dacoits abducted seven youths who had retaliated against their extortion demands. Three men have been released with open death threats and orders to convey the gang's demands to the village. Police said the gang of some dozen dacoits had trapped the men earlier this month while they were collecting firewood from the nearby forests. They were all beaten up and robbed of money and jewellery before being blindfolded and taken to a hideout. The released men reported the matter to the police. "I had gone to cut woods in the village and there were eight men who abducted me. At around 7.30 pm they let me go. They took away four other men. They asked me about my caste and the name of the village and what I did. I told them that I was a artisan," said Ram Shankar. The cops are yet to identify the gang but search parties have fanned out across the region. "Two or three gangs seem to be involved. It is too premature to name them. Our teams have gone to search for the kidnappers. Investigations are going on. We will free rest of the four abducted men soon," said Rajiv Kirshna, senior superintendent of police for the region.

BSP MLAs bring UP Assembly to halt (Go To Top)

Lucknow: The proceeding of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly was rocked by continuous protest and demand by the opposition for the dismissal of the Samajwadi Party-led state government. The dismissal is being demanded on the ground of dismal law and order situation in the state. The protest disrupted Governor T V Rajeswar's address to the joint sitting of the House. Ruckus in the house started as soon as the Governor began reading his speech on the inaugural day of the budget session. Speaheading the protest, BSP members carrying posters and banners were up on their feet, shouting anti-government slogans. Mayawati's men were demanding the immediate dismissal of the Mulayam Singh Yadav government for what they alleged a total breakdown in the law and order machinery in the state. However, the Governor left the house after reading the first and the last sentence of his speech, amidst shouting. BSP MLAs have been up in arms against the state government, especially since January 25, the day when party MLA Raju Pal was murdered in Allahabad. Bahujan Samaj Party legislator Raju Pal was gunned down along with two of his aides in Allahabad on January 25 in broad daylight. His wife and a relative were also seriously injured in the incident.
