Panaji: Manohar Parrikar government in Goa was on Wednesday dismissed by Governor S C Jamir, Raj Bhawan sources said. The dismissal of the two-and-half-year-old BJP government came shortly after Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar won a controversial vote of confidence amidst pandemonium in the assembly when the Speaker had Independent MLA Philipe Neri Rodriguez removed from the House. Speaker Vishwas Satarkar declared that the one-line motion moved by the Chief Minister reposing confidence in his council of ministers was carried after BJP members raised their hands in support while the entire Congress-led opposition was in the well protesting the eviction of Rodriguez. Immediately after the House was adjourned and the Congress-led opposition met the Governor demanding Parrikar government's dismissal.

A statement issued by Governor SC Jamir's office said that the Speaker's role in today's episode in the assembly was unconstitutional. Meanwhile, the Congress said, Goa Governor S C Jamir had no option but to dismiss the Parrikar Government in the light of the disqualification of an independent MLA supporting the Congress- led front, the Congress said today. Assailing the Assembly Speaker's action against the independent MLA Philipe Neri Rodrigues, party spokesperson Girija Vyas Vyas said here that the disqualification was "denial of natural justice, unconstitutional and dictatorial on his part." "We (Congress-led front) have 18 members and the support of the Independent MLA. Rodrigues was served notice just before the trial of strength and was informed about his disqualification," she said. The BJP termed as "unconstitutional" the dismissal of Parrikar Government in Goa and threatened to take to the streets and approach the President against state Governor SC Jamir's decision. "The Governor's decision is unconstitutional. The Congress-led UPA Government is misusing its powers to sabotage democratically elected governments," party Vice-President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said. In response to a question, he said if there were any differences over the role of the Assembly Speaker, the courts could have been approached. "We will take to the streets and approach the President of India against this decision," he said.. The BJP preasident L K Advani described the development in Goa as in "murder of democracy".
