In the wee hours of Friday, Pravesh strangled himself to death in the police lock- up. The police has been given orders to investigate the matter. Till now, four people along with a SHO have been suspended. State Chief Minister Narain Dutt Tiwari has announced Rs.2.5 lakh to the family members of the dead. Khurana meets Vajpayee, complains about Advani (Go To Top)

New Delhi: BJP leader Madan Lal Khurana today met former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and is believed to have spoken out over matters relating to BJP President LK Advani's style of functioning. Khurana who yesterday had said that he was finding it difficult to continue under Advani's leadership, spent close to 30 minutes with Vajpayee and reportedly told him that other party leaders were also finding it difficult to work under Advani. He apparently told Vajpayee that due to the "coterie" around Advani, "mass leaders" were getting sidelined and humiliated, which was also leading to the "downfall" and "disintegration" in several states like Gujarat, Jharkhand and Bihar. Khurana has also joined hands with the opponents of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for the latter's ouster. Friday's complaint against Advani certifies a complete break in relations between Advani and Khurana. The fissures between the two leaders has its roots in the controversial statements made by Advani during his visit to Pakistan in the first week of June. Advani had then praised Pakistan's founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah as a leader with secular credentials and had also described the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid as the 'saddest' day of his life. These two statements by Advani created a sharp divide within the Sangh Parivar, leading the RSS and the VHP to demand Advani's resignation as BJP President. The BJP on the other hand spent a considerable amount of time in working out a face-saving solution for the party and the cadre.

Pak SC upholds death sentence of alleged 'RAW' agent (Go To Top)

Islamabad: Pakistan's Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence awarded by an Anti-Terrorism Court to one Manjeet Singh, in five bomb blast cases in Pakistan, while taking him to be an agent of India's intelligence agency - Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). According to the Dawn, a two-member SC bench dismissed appeals by Manjeet Singh, even as his counsel maintained his plea that the original name of his client was Surjeet Singh, and he was, at the most, a smuggler of Indian liquor into Pakistan. On the other hand, the prosecution claimed that Manjeet had admitted to his involvement in bomb blasts in Anarkali and Bhati Gate in Lahore, Bhawana Bazar in Faisalabad, in Multan and an explosion on a bus going from Lahore to Ghazi in 1990. According to the paper, the convict was born in Uttar Paradesh and grew up in Agra, before leaving the city in 1972 to settle in Amritsar. In 1987 he joined Indian Military Intelligence, and was assigned tasks in Pakistan. Soon he became a permanent agent of RAW and in that capacity he visited Pakistan at least 14 times in different years. He reportedly received special training of bomb-making by RAW, and got a fake ID card of Pakistan under fake name of Khushi Muhammad in 1990. He was arrested by Pakistan Security Forces at Kasur Border on August 30, 1990, when he was leaving Pakistan after having carried out bomb blasts, said the paper.

Sri Lanka, LTTE agree to hold talks (Go To Top)

Colombo: Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealem (LTTE) have agreed to hold their first high first high-level talks since the collapse of the peace moves in 2003. The chief Tamil Tiger negotiator confirmed that the Tigers had agreed to discuss the implementation of the 2002 ceasefire agreement. Government spokesman Nimal Siripala de Silva, while welcoming the rebels' decision to attend the talks, said that the government was willing to engage with the rebels without any preconditions. The moves come in the wake of last week's assassination of Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, which the government blamed, was the handiwork of the LTTE. Kadirgamar's assassination was seen as a major setback to Sri Lanka's peace process, and the government in response to his killing, introduced emergency rule throughout the island nation, reports the BBC. Vidar Helgesen, deputy foreign minister of Norway, part of the foreign mission overseeing the truce, said the Tamil Tigers' agreement to talks was an important move. "This is a significant step forward against the backdrop of the killing of the foreign minister," he said. Officials however said that at time and place for the talks is yet to be confirmed. There were also reports that the LTTE was under heavy pressure to get involved in the talks as proof of its commitment to maintain peace.

BSE turns BSE Limited; 51 percent share to be held by public (Go To Top)

Mumbai: After 130 years, the Stock Exchange, Mumbai (BSE), the Asia's oldest stock exchange today formally turned into a corporate entity and now would be called BSE Limited in which 51 percent of its shares would be held by the public. In its new form BSE as a company would now itself be listed on the stock exchanges, and its accounts would be open for public scrutiny and questioning. According to the experts the corporatisation of BSE will have a huge impact on its working culture. The organisation, which was so far called a closed club, will now have to open up. Its books will be now scrutinised and it will have to compete for the market share. The Stock Exchange, Mumbai, popularly known as ''BSE'' was established in 1875 as ''The Native Share and Stock Brokers Association'' as a voluntary non profit making association of persons and from now it would be a demutualised and corporate entity. It is meant to uphold the interests of the investors and ensure redress of their grievances whether against the companies or its own member-brokers. A 20-member Governing Board decides the policies and regulates the affairs of the Exchange. BSE has more than 4,600 companies on its board, approximately five times the number of companies listed on National Stock Exchange (NSE). The average daily turnover of the Exchange during fiscal 2003-04 and 2004-05 was Rs 1978.81 crore and Rs 2050.26 crore respectively. After corporatisation of BSE it is expected that the competition between BSE and NSE will increase.
