Vajpayee, Advani attend RSS 'Guru Dakshina' ceremony

New Delhi: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders including Party President L K Advani and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today attended a 'Guru Dakshina' ceremony of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at party spokesperson V K Malhotra's residence. Former BJP President Venkaiah Naidu and senior party leader Pramod Mahajan, joined a number of party MPs for the early morning RSS 'shakha', specially organised for the party workers. The participants saluted the saffron flag (Dhwaja Pranam) and offered an unspecified amount of cash in a sealed envelope as Guru Dakshina. Though it is an annual feature, after the Jinnah controversy, which has strained the relation between both the organisation, it was the first such event in which senior Leaders of BJP and RSS were seen together. The media was strictly prohibited from covering the function where RSS National Executive member Sripad Shastri, known for his ideological oratory, gave a lecture to them. "We don't consider any person as guru and that is why we pay obeisance to the saffron flag. Swayamsevaks offer money to the Sangh in this ceremony as the organisation does not collect donations from each and everyone," Naidu said after attending the function.

Manipur blockade to be lifted tomorrow  (Go To Top)

Imphal: The 49-day long economic blockade of the two national highways passing through Manipur - NH 39 and NH 53, imposed by the All Naga Students Association of Manipur (ANSAM) would be lifted from 12 noon tomorrow. The suspension comes after a joint meeting of the ANSAM and All Naga Students Federation at Kohima today. The decision in this effect was declared at the Naga Students' Federation (NSF) office today by NSF President Pushika Awomi and ANSAM President Paul Langhu. They said that the blockade is being suspended as the people of Manipur are facing lots of difficulties. According to sources, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Shivraj Patil had also requested the Naga groups to lift the blockade. The blockade by Naga group has forced the Centre to airlift essential commodities including tonnes of food and medicine to the state since last week. According to the association, it was against the plan for unification of the Nagas. However, many social groups have supported the government's decision. "Every people have the right to protest. The Kukis, Nagas are all people of Manipur. They have a right to protest but blocking the road is not a way to protest. So, if they are doing a democratic protest we are ready to participate. Blocking the road is no way to protest. It is a war crime," said Rojez, president, Manipur Students' Association. The blockade has led to severe shortage of food and fuel in the state's capital Imphal. Manipur has been cut from the rest of the country since the blockade began. The Imphal-Guwahati NH 39 and Imphal-Silchar NH 53 are completely deserted since the starting of the blockade. Naga student's body ANSAM launched their economic blockade against Manipur government's decision to declare June 18 as a holiday to observe "state integrity day."

Gen Karamat advises Pakistanis to stay away from US (Go To Top)

Washington: Pakistan's Ambassador to the US, General (retd) Jehangir Karamit has advised Pakistani not to travel to the US unless it was very essential. Karamat said that that Pakistanis were already facing problems post 9/11, as Washington was trying to create a balance between security and immigration issues He said that while the US and Pakistan was working closely on this, another mishap in the form of the London blasts took place. "The desired balance has not been achieved so far and the people still face difficulties at airports even if they possess legal visas. As compared to other nationals, they have to face investigation, especially those who are working across the Canadian border have to go through this situation every day," The Nation quoted him as saying. "Events like 7/7 definitely influence the Embassy's efforts, but they are continuously working to make sure that nobody with valid documents is sent back from the airports. We're working with the US Department of Homeland Security, State Department, etc., to secure that level of balance and are hopeful that at some point in the future, we'll achieve that it," he added. He further said that statements appearing in the Pakistani media also had an enormous impact as far as Pakistan's image in the international arena was concerned. "Whatever statements appear in the Pakistani media do have enormous impact abroad when it comes to country's image at international level. Such things are quoted and read here and people think whatever is being said in Pakistan is true and that's how they base their perception about our country," he said. "I haven't come across a deliberate effort to malign Pakistan. As President Musharraf said that whenever something happens, directly or indirectly some connection to Pakistan comes up. I think it's that factor which plays up and leads us to the perception that perhaps Pakistan is being targeted, or Pakistanis are being discriminated against," he added.
