Red-heads bear pain better than blondes and brunettes (Go To Top)

London: A recent research shows that red-headed women are better at bearing pain than blondes or brunettes. According to the researchers, ginger haired females, such as Fergie and actress Nicole Kidman are able to cope with pain in a better manner, as their bodies carry a gene called Mc1r, that causes the colouring, but dulls any discomfort. Now British scientists are trying to develop a painkilling drug from the gene, by using genetically-engineered mice as it endures pain better. "The interesting thing that has emerged is that the mice withstand pain better, The Sun quoted Professor Ian Jackson, of the Medical Research Council's Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh as saying. "The nature of it is still being worked out but it does appear that redheads require less anaesthetic to block out certain pains," he added. The findings, however, reveal that Mc1r gene does not help men, because of the subtle differences in the way male and female brains process pain. After finding ways of testing the pain sensitivity of the mice, the researchers will start applying their findings to humans, the report added.

Aspirin not effective for all heart patients (Go To Top)

Washington: A new study conducted by researchers from Western Australia suggests that the anti-coagulant action of aspirin is not effective for all heart patients and does not promise protection against cardiovascular events despite its regular intake. The team led by Professor Andrew Szczeklik from Poland and Professor Graeme Hankey will present the latest findings on aspirin resistance at the XXth Congress of the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis today. "There are at least two possible explanations for the aspirin- resistance phenomenon. One is high levels of blood cholesterol, which can in itself promote coagulation events in the blood stream. In patients with high cholesterol levels, aspirin in in normal doses has hardly any anti-clotting effects, whereas treatment with a statin (inhibitor of cholesterol) significantly reduces blood clotting. In patients with coronary heart disease, aspirin exerts its anti-coagulant effects only when blood cholesterol is in the 'normal' range," Szczeklik added. "A patient's genetic make-up may alter their response to aspirin resistance. For example, in coronary heart disease patients carrying one particular gene are resistant to the anti-coagulant action of aspirin and are at increased risk of an acute coronary event."
