`Wuthering
Heights' voted women's all-time favourite read (Go

London:
A new poll conducted by Orange Prize for Fiction has
indicated that the Bronte sisters are most women's favourite
authors with Emily Bronte's 1939 classic 'Wuthering Heights'
and Charlotte Bronte's romantic novel 'Jane Eyre' emerging
as most women's favourite reads. The survey, which questioned
400 women, asked them to name a book that was "a seminal
female read" and had changed the way that women saw themselves.
They also asked for a book that had inspired women and given
them strength. Women showed a preference for strong and
well defined female characters, as the wilful Cathy in 'Wuthering
Heights' and the protagonist in 'Jane Eyre. According to
The Telegraph, the survey also found that women showed a
preference for female authors, with Nobel Prize winner Toni
Morrison's 'Beloved' and three titles by Jeanette Winterson
also featuring in the favourites list. However, it was not
clear whether men and women were likely to pick up different
novels because men's favourites like 'The Hitchhiker's Guide
to the Galaxy,' 'Heart of Darkness,' 'The Great Gatsby,'
'Catch 22,' 'Remembrance of Times Past' and 'The Lord of
the Rings,' were also liked by a lot of women. The Survey
was a preliminary round of a poll, which will announce the
10 all time women's favourites that it will be announced
on BBC in December.
