Atomic
tests may be behind Blair's falling health (Go
To Top)
London:
British Premier Tony Blair's falling health may be due
to his exposure to radiation following a nuclear test carried
out by the British government near Australia in the post
war years. According to The Daily Mail, Blair then a three-year
old toddler was living with his family in Adelaide when
the British detonated an atomic device in the Maralinga
desert way back on October 11, 1956. As per the report,
a windstorm carried the radioactive dust to Adelaide, which
enveloped the city for six days from October 11- 16, 1956.
Medical officials believe that Blair's mother Hazel, who
died due to thyroid cancer, may have probably been afflicted
with cancer due to the radiation. It may be the case with
Blair as well. "Adelaide in South Australia was plastered
with radioactive fallout from 11 to 16 October, 1956. As
a youngster in Adelaide drinking local milk, Tony Blair
is very likely to be at risk of bone cancer himself," The
Bulletin magazine quoted British Medical researcher and
toxicologist Dick van Steenis as saying. However, Downing
Street has rebutted the theories as absurd. "It sounds like
the silly season's been going on a little bit longer than
we thought. The Prime Minister's perfectly fine," a spokeswoman
for Blair was quoted as saying. However, Van Steenis believes
that though Blair has acknowledged radiation as the cause
of his mother's death, he would himself never own up to
it as his government might be sued by former personnel involved
in the nuclear tests. "He has never denied that radioactive
fallout in Australia was ultimately the cause of his mother's
death. But he won't acknowledge it because to do so would
strengthen the legal case against his government for the
compensation entitlements of British and Australian servicemen
involved in the British atomic testing programme," he further
added.

Washington:
Scientists from SETI, the worldwide project for Search
for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence claim to have detected
what they believe to be the first radio signal from an alien
civilisation. The report to be published in the science
journal New Scientist states that the faint pulse, detected
by the world's biggest single-dish telescope, the Arecibo
radio telescope, in Puerto Rico originated from a planet
located somewhere between the two constellations Pisces
and Aries. Scientists have ruled out the possibility of
the signal as interference from Earth, satellites or other
cosmic sounds. "It boggles my mind. We' re looking for something
that screams 'Artificial' but this just doesn't do that.
The signal is moving rapidly in frequency. You'd expect
that from a transmitter on a rapidly-rotating planet," the
journal quoted SETI scientist Eric Korpela as saying. Interestingly,
the signal was first detected by two home computer users
in Germany and the United States, following which SETI redirected
Arecibo towards the source.
