Maintain proper accounts, SC to Prasar Bharti, BCCI and SET

        New Delhi: Acting upon a petition filed by ZEE TV seeking telecast right for upcoming India-Australia and India- South Africa cricket Test matches, the Supreme Court today directed Prasar Bharti, Set Satellite Pvt Ltd, and BCCI to maintain proper accounts of the revenue received from the telecast of these matches. The apex court deferred the hearing on the application, saying it would first decide the maintainability of ZEE's writ petition. ZEE TV had moved to the Supreme Court to resume hearing on its petition, challenging cancellation of tender process for award of telecast right of all matches held in India between 2004 and 2008. BCCI had initially awarded the telecast rights to ZEE after it emerged as the highest bidder with its bid of Rs.308 crores, but later scrapped the tender.

Four shot dead in Manipur (Go To Top)

       Imphal: Four persons were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Kwakeithel area of Imphal West district of Manipur late on Monday night, official sources said here today. According to the eyewitnesses, all the four victims were tied together before they were shot dead at a heavily populated area of Kwakeithel. All the four bodies have been sent to the morgue of Regional Institute of Medical Science Hospital for post mortem, sources said.

Campaigning comes to en end in Arunachal (Go To Top)

        Itanagar: Campaigning today came to an end in Arunachal Pradesh which goes to polls on October 7. Both the Congress and the BJP launched hectic campaigning as several senior leaders from both the parties visited the state. Among the star campaigners who visited the state were Ajit Jogi from the Congress and Varun Gandhi from the BJP. The Congress, upbeat after Chief Minister Gegong Apang joined the party along with his entire set of MLAs, is contesting on the remaining 57 seats out of the total 60. The party has already bagged three seats with its candidates declared elected unopposed. The BJP is contesting only 38 seats.

Pappu Yadav surrenders before Patna court (Go To Top)

       Patna: RJD candidate for Madhepura Lok Sabha by- poll Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav today surrendered before a CBI court in Patna in accordance with a Supreme Court order. Yadav went to the court in the afternoon and surrendered before the designated judge J.K. Sen in connection with CPI (M) MLA Ajit Sarkar murder case several years back. Earlier, on October 1 the Apex Court had cancelled Yadav's bail granted by Patna High Court and asked him to surrender to the appropriate authorities in Patna. He was accused of entering Beur Jail in late evening and celebrating his release with his henchmen. Now, Yadav's wife Ranjeeta Ranjan, a Lok Janshakti Party MP, will manage his election campaign in Madhepura. She has been actively campaigning for her husband over the past one week. Undeterred by possible suspension by her party for indulging in anti-party activities, Ranjeeta said, "for me my husband comes first and then comes the party. I will campaign for him and save from the false cases fabricated against him."

Six Hizbul Mujahideen militants gunned down in Surankote (Go To Top)

         Jammu: In yet another setback to the Hizbul Mujahideen group, the army gunned down six militants in Surankote in Kashmir, officials said today. Security forces in a joint operation with police in Keli Ban area of Surankote killed the six militants last night. Six AK rifles, a large cache of ammunition, explosives, four radio sets and medicines were recovered from the slain militants. Colonel Sanjay Thakur, Commanding Officer, said they had been tailing the outlawed guerrillas for a while. "Yesterday morning that is on 4th they encountered the militants for the first time and in the first encounter two were killed. The encounter carried on till the afternoon and by afternoon two more were killed. By 4:30 in the evening, the remaining two militants were searched for and gunned down by the special forces. All these six militants are of HM (Hizbul Mujahideen) and Hizbul Mujahideen (Pir Panjal Regiment), (HM (PPR)," said Thakur. Two of the slain militants have been identified as Zafar Iqbal and Mohammed Azad of Hizbul Mujahideen and four belonging to HM (PPR) are Syed Khalid Patnan, Shahabuddin Ghauri, Abdul Rehman and Saifulla Khalid. Thakur said the militants had plans to trigger a powerful blast in the region's crowded market. In another incident in the valley, Army gunned down Mohamad Sharief alias Musa, self styled district commander of Hizbul Mujahideen group.

Congress, NCP present a picture of solidarity (Go To Top)

       Nasik: Congress president Sonia Gandhi concluded her Maharashtra roadshow on Tuesday with a rally in Nasik. Presenting a picture of solidarity, Sonia shared the platform with NCP Chief and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar. This was the first joint rally of the Congress and NCP after the ruling coalition partners decided to fight the polls in an alliance. While praising the UPA government, Pawar sharply criticised the performance of the Vajpayee-led NDA government. Earlier in the day, Sonia lashed out at the previous Shiv Sena- BJP alliance government for ill-governance and injustices. Sonia also held a rally in Yavatmal from where Congress-NCP alliance candidate and sitting MLA, Kirti Gandhi, is contesting. "We have come out with a joint election manifesto and that all alliance partners have committed themselves to defeat the evil design of saffron combine," she said.

His ill health apart from affecting a massive Sena electioneering blitzkreig, has caused concern within alliance partner BJP. A celebrated orator in Marathi, Sena supremo Bal Thackrey strikes an instant chord with the voters. His fiery speeches in the last Lok Sabha polls brought in rich dividends for the Sena-BJP combine.

India, S Korea sign extradition treaty (Go To Top)

       New Delhi: India and South Korea today signed two separate treaties, one on extradition treaty and another on mutual legal assistance on criminal matters. The treaties were signed during the visit of South Korea President Roh Moo-Hyun. On the occasion he said that his country was "full of hope and expectation" about the future of bilateral ties. Roh, who arrived in New Delhi on Monday on a three-day state visit, is the first South Korean President to visit India in eight years.

Lucknow University student shot dead (Go To Top)

       Lucknow: A Lucknow University student was killed late on Monday night on the campus following a clash between two rival student groups, who have fielded their presidential candidates to contest the student union elections. According to the police, Manish Ray got involved in a fight during campaigning for elections, scheduled to be held later in the week, and died during firing at Chandrashekhar Azad Hostel.
