EU issues passports for pets (Go To Top)

London: Now people travelling within the European Union (EU) will have to ensure that they don't forget to carry their pet's passports along with their own. A new "pet passports" for dogs, cats and ferrets travelling between EU countries has come into force from this week. The pet passports, however, will prove to be more of a blessing than a bane for people as they can now do away with the 25 page document that they had to carry earlier to prove that their pets did not have rabies. This also ensures that pet owners will be able to travel without having to check the particular rules regarding pets in the EU country they are visiting, reports the Daily Mail. The passport will include the animal's name, species, breed, sex, date of birth, coat description, as well as a passport size photograph. They have been made available in all veterinary hospitals across the UK. The passport will also need verification from the vet about the animal's vaccination. Animals travelling between countries will have to continue to get blood tests and microchip identification tests for rabies. "This is a major step for the free movement of people with their pets and I hope that member states have done all that is necessary to fulfil citizens expectations," the report quoted David Bryne, the EU commissioner for health and consumer protection as saying.
