Kushinagar's lactating wonder cow (Go To Top)

Kushinagar (UP): Believe it or not, a cow in Kushinagar near Gorakhpur has been lactating for the past ten years. The cow owned by one Parasnath, a farmer, regularly generates about 10-40 litres milk per day after birth of a calf in 1994. Parasnath says the cow has magical powers and claims that it has cured diseases like leprosy and conjunctivitis. "It has been giving milk for the past 10 years. The milk has medicinal qualities and lots of people have been cured on basis of it," he said. The milk generated is given away and not sold. Parasnath and members of his family and other villagers are treating the cow as Kamdhenu, the heavenly bovine that gave nectar like milk. The word Kamdhenu symbolises one who is capable of fulfilling aspirations and desires. "We have looked into the matter but there is no clear reason behind this," said Dr P.K. Srivastav, a veterinarian in Kushinagar.

WTC towers were inspired by Islamic design (Go To Top)

Washington: The World Trade Centre towers brought down by the Al Qaeda on September 11, 2001 incorporated several aspects of Islamic design. In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, architect Minoru Yamasaki, who built the two towers, was quoted by the Daily Times as saying that while creating the Manhattan masterpiece, he was quite heavily influenced by an earlier project that he had undertaken and completed in Saudi Arabia. "This pattern was most visible at the base of the buildings, which were ringed by pointed arches resembling those found in mosques and on Muslim prayer rugs. The plaza fronting the towers paid homage to Mecca, Islam's holiest place, by replicating that city's courtyard layout, according to architect Laurie Kerr, who has studied Yamasaki's work." Yamasaki, himself, described the Trade Centre plaza, which featured a circular fountain and places to sit, as a Mecca - "an oasis, a paved garden where people can spend a few moments to relieve the tensions and monotonies of the usual working day." The first tower was completed in 1972, but there was little general public awareness that the towers reflected Yamasaki's interest in Islamic architecture, though he dropped plenty of hints in his 1979 autobiography, 'A Life in Architecture'. In fact, the history of Islamic-influenced architecture in the United States hasn't been given its due for many years. It dates back at least to the late 19th century - longer if Moorish architecture is considered. Moorish buildings have existed in the United States since before the 18th century, primarily in the Southwest, where former Spanish citizens brought with them an architectural sense influenced by years of Muslim rule in Spain.

"We would normally do about 20 or 30 major procedures a month on the Gold Coast, but in October we did around 50. It's like that all over the place. There could be 20 clinics in Queensland, so multiply that out and that's a lot of cosmetic surgery being done at the moment," Noon, was quoted by the paper, as saying.
