Nepal landmine blast kills five forest guards

      Kathmandu: Five forest guards were killed in Nepal when a landmine planted by Maoist guerrillas exploded under their jeep, police said today. A police spokesman told the guards died late on Monday in the Parsa Wildlife Reserve in Nepal's southern plains bordering India, some 150 km south of the capital Kathmandu. "It was a massive explosion. They died instantly," he said. The area is a stronghold of the Maoists, who are fighting to overthrow the constitutional monarchy in Nepal, the world's only Hindu kingdom. Nov 23, 2004

My release not part of any deal: Zardari (Go To Top)

      Karachi: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto's husband, Asif Ali Zardari, has said that his release from internment was not due to any clandestine deal struck with the Musharraf regime. According to The News, Zardari said that not only was his release a part of any deal, the fact was neither was he going to quit politics, nor was he thinking of leaving the country. He further added that he was looking forward to play an active role in the countrys political process and act as a bridge for the restoration of democracy and the Constitution and the removal of the "undemocratic set-up" from Pakistan. "I will live and die here," the paper quoted him as saying.

Jet en route to pick up Bush Sr crashes (Go To Top)

      Houston: A private jet which was en route to Houston to pick up US President George W Bush's father hit a light pole and crashed today. The plane was said to be hundreds of feet lower than it should have been when the accident took place. But, US federal investigators remained tight-lipped regarding the cause of the accident that killed three crew members. The jet was to pick up former President who lives in Houston for a trip to Eucador to give a speech at a business conference, one of aides was quoted as saying.

Mukesh Ambani says: "I am the final authority" (Go To Top)

      Mumbai: Reliance Industries, Group Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani said that he was the "final authority" on all matters concerning the company. His statement came a day after going public with his statement on "ownership differences". "There is no ambiguity in Dhirubhai Ambani's legacy that C and MD is the final authority on all matters concerning Reliance," he said in an e-mail message to over 80,000 employees of the Group. His message further said: "Our founder-Chairman late Dhirubhai Ambani had taken all necessary steps to separate ownership from management and had settled all issues during his lifetime." Mukesh also sought to clarify that there would be no impact on the functioning of the group by the ongoing controversy over reported differences with his brother Anil. "There is no question of any effect on the integrity of Reliance... Reliance will continue to grow in strength," he further said.

      Kanpur: India were 401 for 4 in their first innings at close on the fourth day of the first cricket Test against South Africa here today. India trailed South Africa by 109 runs.
