Eat cabbages to keep cancer away (Go To Top)

Washington: Paying heed to granny's instructions to eat greens might pay off now, as researchers are trying to establish that the substances produced after eating cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, sprouts or cauliflower are capable of fighting cancer. In an ongoing trial, a research team headed by Professor Alison Fiander, at the Wales College Of Medicine, Cardiff University is conducting surveys of women in Wales to help find out if the substances called Diindolylmethane hold the key to cancer prevention, and are also conducting a clinical trial to determine if taking this substance as a food supplement reduces the incidence of cervical abnormalities. Diindolylmethane seems to exert its effect by modifying the breakdown products of oestrogen in the body and by inducing abnormal cells to self destruct, but to obtain enough DIM to benefit, at least two raw heads of cabbage would need to be eaten daily. Right now the the researchers are are only including women with borderline or mildly abnormal smears for the trial, however they soon plan to extend it to those with more severe abnormalities on their cervical smear.
