Fizzy drinks could tear your guts (Go To Top)

Sydney: Pesticides in cold drinks is not the only danger to be reckoned with, as doctors have also found that fizzy drinks can damage your gut. According to ABC online, the rare danger of gulping down cold fizzy drinks are highlighted in a case study of a woman who tore her oesophagus by gulping a large mouthful from a bottle. Dr Hui Jern Loh, of the surgery department at Fremantle Hospital in Western Australia, reported that the 57-year-old woman lost consciousness briefly, was in pain, felt nauseous and had a fever after having the drink. "We postulate that because it's a cold fizzy drink and she drank it quite rapidly in one gulp, the coldness and the quantity of the drink caused spasms in her oesophagus so the space between her mouth and the oesophagus closed up," Dr Loh was quoted as saying. "The bubbles popped and made the pressure much worse," she added. People who suffer from digestive problems, including reflux oesophagitis, infectious oesophagitis or Barrett's ulceration, are at greatest risk of developing this rare condition.

Lost kingdom of Atlantis found in Cyprus (Go To Top)

London: A team of American ocean researchers have claimed to have found the lost kingdom of Atlantis off the coast of Cyprus. According to The Telegraph, the researchers led by Robert Sarmast used the latest sonar technology to create images of the sea bed a mile below the surface of the Mediterranean. "I am absolutely convinced I have found Atlantis. The sonar images showed what appeared to be two straight walls each about a mile long at either end of a flat-topped hill where the city's temples would have been situated," Sarmast said. The images also showed evidence of two streams that Sarmast said had flowed from springs on the summit. These fed into a trench or canal bed, which seemed to run concentrically around the hill. Sarmast added that the latest evidence matches exactly the detailed description of Atlantis given by Plato. "There are about 60 specific points that match Plato's account. How can you explain away a bunch of coincidences like this? ," he said.
