Delhi: A fire engulfed Asia's largest fruits and vegetable
wholesale market in Delhi late on Friday night, while Diwali,
the festival of lights, was on in full swing. Hundreds of
shops were gutted and goods and property worth millions
lost in the fire at Delhi's Azadpur market, one of the city's
oldest and busiest marketplaces. No human casualties were
reported in the mishap. Over 12 fire tenders battled hours
to bring the fire under control. The fire is supposed to
have been caused by bursting of fire crackers. The 200-year-old
markets of Azadpur were the main commercial hub of Delhi
during the Mughal rule.
As many as 271 fire incidents were reported from the national
Capital itself on the occasion of Diwali yesterday. Medium
blazes were reported from Sangam Vihar, Pili Kothi area

Jaipur:
Chinese motorbikes, Chinese firecrackers, Chinese decorative
lights, Chinese idols and now, Chinese chickens. This festive
season, chicken lovers in the Pink City are raving about
Chinese chickens, a rare breed imported from China. With
Eid just a few days away, chicken lovers in Jaipur are feasting
on Chinese chickens provided by chicken traders from UP.
"I have brought these chickens from Allahabad. This is Chinese
chicken. It is very tasty. We bring it here during the month
of Ramzan and offer it for sale. I have brought about 500
chickens. We sell it for about 200 to 220 ruppes per kg,"
said Bhurelal, a chicken seller. This special chicken is
relished by its buyers due to its delicious flavour. According
to some, the egg too is bigger and tastier than that of
the regular chicken. "These chickens are very good. We can
also keep them in our homes. The flesh is very delicious.
The eggs too are of good quality. It's an exotic bird,"
says Hanif, a buyer. "There is a higher demand for chickens
during Ramadhan because people prefer to eat meat during
this month. Since the flesh of this breed of chicken is
very delicious, its demand during Ramadhan naturally goes
up," says Warris Hussain, another chicken buyer.
Malappuram

Malappuram:
With the completion of a major e literacy project, Malappuram
has become the first district in India to become fully e-literate,
with over six lakh individuals having a basic knowledge
of computers, including the Internet. Malappuram is one
of the 14 districts in Kerala. It lies in the northern part
of the state and has a population of around 36 lakh people.
the majority of whom are Muslims. The e-literacy project
initiated by the government is called Akshya. It's main
objective is to provide basic knowledge to general public
about computers. Expressing his happiness over the achievement,
Malappuram's District Collector, M Shivashankaran, said
that the total cost of imparting the 15-hour course per
student was a meagre amount of Rs.140, and added that 60
percent of the participants were women. Villagers like Meena,
who availed the service, said:"Earlier I did not know what
a computer was and how to operate it. I was afraid of it,
but now after joining the Akshya center everything is clear".
"People thought that computers are meant for rich. But because
of this Akshya project, the difference between the rich
and the poor is almost finished. It is very useful," said
Mohammed Jaleel, another villager. Many believe Kerala's
ambitious e-literacy project will become a model for other
states to follow. The 600 Akshaya centres set up across
Malappuram alone are expected to create about 35,000 job
opportunities even as they make rural folk IT-literate.
After the success, state government is now thinking of replicating
the experiment in the other 13 districts of Kerala.
