51st spot on the annual list of the most powerful and influential
Jewish Americans in a Jewish weekly paper. However, J.J.
Goldberg, the editor of The Forward paper, has defended
the decision to include Madonna in the list. There are a
lot of differences of opinion about the nature of the Jewish
community - who's Jewish and who isn't. Some people who
are not Jewish are married to Jews, or practicing Judaism.
But we start with the assumption that this is not a simple
matter," New York Daily News quoted him as saying. As for
Madonna, "She's a practitioner of the Kabbala, so she's
practicing Judaism, for Christ's sake! Well, not really
for Christ's sake. But she's probably the world's best-known
practitioner of Judaism right now," he added. However, Madonna's
publicist Liz Rosenberg repeatedly advised The Forward that
"it wouldn't be appropriate to include her on such a list"
because Madonna "is not Jewish".
