Stay
stress-free to avoid a miscarriage (Go
To Top)
London:
A new study conducted by researchers in Germany suggests
that stress really can cause miscarriages. According to
Daily Mail, the team led by Petra Arck showed that when
pregnant mice are subjected to loud noises and other forms
of stress, they develop hormonal imbalances that turn the
immune system against the foetus. In the end, the foetus
is rejected. "We can clearly say that stress has a major
impact on pregnancy maintenance," Arck said. The biological
pathway uncovered by the team starts with the release of
stress hormones such as cortisol. As cortisol levels rise
in the bloodstream, they suppress production of progesterone,
a hormone critical to healthy pregnancies. This sets off
a "domino effect" which finally stops the immune system
tolerating the foreign cells of the placenta and foetus.
To see if the same applied to humans, Arck monitored the
progress of 864 pregnant women, taking blood samples and
testing them for stress. 55 women who miscarried were more
likely to have reported stress than the others and were
more likely to have lower progesterone levels and other
signs of the chain of events putting their pregnancy at
risk.

According to E-Online, the new project, tentatively titled
Fahrenheit 9/11 1/2, will pick up where Fahrenheit left
off. It will address what Moore sees as the administration's
failures in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
"Fifty-one percent of the American people lacked information
([on election day) and we want to educate and enlighten
them. They weren't told the truth. We're communicators and
it's up to us to start doing it now," he was quoted as saying.
The film will be produced by Miramax's Harvey Weinstein
through the Fellowship Adventure Group, set up by Weinstein
with brother Bob, Lions Gate Films and IFC Films to distribute
the original film.
