Male breast cancer is on the rise (Go To Top)

Washington: The largest study ever conducted on male breast cancer has revealed that its incidence is rising and that the disease is usually detected in men when the tumors are bigger. The findings suggest that breast cancer in men may have some important biological differences from the female disease, and that men are seemingly less aware than they should be about being vulnerable to breast cancer. According to the study's lead investigator, Sharon H. Giordano, assistant professor at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Centre, the incidence of the disease has increased significantly in the last 25 years. In fact, the ratio has increased to 1.08 per 100,000 men from .86. "Male breast cancer is rare, accounting for less than one percent of all breast cancer, or about 1,600 new cases in the United States in 2004. While, it's not as high of an increase in cases as that in women, men should be alert to the possibility that the disease could affect them," said Giordano.

To assess dissimilarity between male and female breast cancer, Giordano and her colleagues used information from a National Cancer Institute database called SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results). They analyzed SEER data from 1973 through 1998 on 2,524 cases of male breast cancer and 380,856 cases of female breast cancer. The investigators found that compared to female patients, male patients were significantly older when diagnosed with breast cancer. They were also more likely to have later stage disease and had more spread of the cancer to their lymph nodes. "It's perhaps ironic that tumors in men are easier to feel than they are in women, yet the disease is being discovered at a later stage in men than in women," said Giordano. One reason for such a late diagnosis may be that men assume that they are experiencing a benign condition called gynecomastia, or atypical growth of breast tissue that affects about a third of males at some point in their lives. "Now that we have a clearer understanding of the biology of breast cancer in men, further research is needed to determine the optimal treatment for men," said Giordano. May 24, 2004

Shocking sex games that New York kids play (Go To Top)

New York: Kids no longer enjoy the simple pleasures of playing with dolls. They, including elementary school kids indulge in sex games. The latest fad is a multi-coloured rubber 'sex bracelet' which kids openly flaunt on their arms. Parents are oblivious of the fact that each bracelet represents a sexual act according to a secret code formulated by kids, reports the New York Post. A black bracelet indicates sexual intercourse, blue is oral sex, red is a lap dance or French kiss and white is a homosexual kiss - and it gets more in depth. Green represents having sex outside. Some of the bracelets stand for specific sexual positions, and there's even a light-green glow-in-the-dark version that means "using sex toys."
