Everything you wanted to know about the bra (Go To Top)

London: A bra is that humble piece of clothing which has caught men's fantasy and has been a woman's best friend for a long time now, but little do we know of its origins. According to the Sun, "Bras Unpadded," the show which was aired on Sky One channel on May 16 demystified some of the lesser known facts: The bra as we know it today was first designed by Mary Phelps in the year 1913, she later sold the patent of her design for as little as 1500 dollars. Before Phelps designed the modern bra, it comprised of two pieces of silk handkerchiefs tied together with a ribbon. It had emerged as an alternative to the old-fashioned corset that had been worn by women since the mid-16th century. Bras for different cup sizes appeared only in 1928 as a protest against the flat-chested look that was preferred in the early 1920s. The famous underwear line Wonderbra, which design bra's that boost cleavage and give a bigger effect was first introduced in the late 1960s. However, it gained popularity only after Eva Herzigova's "Hello Boys" commercial in 1994. On an average, American women own six bras. One out of which is strapless and one coloured. London brassiere makers Rigby and Peller are the official bra makers for the Queen. The UK bra industry is estimated to be worth 600 million pounds per annum.
