Bombay Dreams - 'silliest' musical ever (Go To Top)

London: After being called "mind-numbing bunk," "an expensive model of blandness" and "loud and wasteful" by the American press, Andrew Lloyd Weber's 14 million dollar musical Bombay Dreams has now been called "one of the silliest musicals in memory" by a leading publication. According to Daily Times, the Indo-British musical which recently opened on Broadway after completing its two-year run in London has been summed up as "moral slobbism foisted on Americans from abroad" by John Lahr, the New Yorker magazine critic. The story has been described as that of an untouchable, poor slum dweller Akaash, who becomes a huge Bollywood star after he is discovered by an actress Rani (Ayesha Dharkar). "Over the course of nine production numbers, Akaash briefly forgets his roots but not, unfortunately, the lyrics," he wrote in the review. "The actress and masterly cookbook writer Madhur Jaffrey plays Shanti, Akaash's grandmother, who lives to see Akaash save both her shanty town and his soul. Jaffrey's book 'From Curries to Kebabs' is on sale in the theatre lobby. I recommend her recipes; it's the show I can't swallow," he said in conclusion.
