London:
After being called "mind-numbing bunk," "an expensive
model of blandness" and "loud and wasteful" by the American
press, Andrew Lloyd Weber's 14 million dollar musical Bombay
Dreams has now been called "one of the silliest musicals
in memory" by a leading publication. According to Daily
Times, the Indo-British musical which recently opened on
Broadway after completing its two-year run in London has
been summed up as "moral slobbism foisted on Americans from
abroad" by John Lahr, the New Yorker magazine critic. The
story has been described as that of an untouchable, poor
slum dweller Akaash, who becomes a huge Bollywood star after
he is discovered by an actress Rani (Ayesha Dharkar). "Over
the course of nine production numbers, Akaash briefly forgets
his roots but not, unfortunately, the lyrics," he wrote
in the review. "The actress and masterly cookbook writer
Madhur Jaffrey plays Shanti, Akaash's grandmother, who lives
to see Akaash save both her shanty town and his soul. Jaffrey's
book 'From Curries to Kebabs' is on sale in the theatre
lobby. I recommend her recipes; it's the show I can't swallow,"
he said in conclusion.

London:
Red seems to be the colour of the season in Poland where
the lingerie shops are fast running out of crimson coloured
lingeries. According to This is London, schoolgirls are
clamouring after red bras and knickers after it was claimed
that most of the girls who scored top grades had opted for
red underwear. According to an unsourced study that was
first made public last year, students who wear red underwear
for their A-Level exams passed with top grades. And though
the exams are still three months away the shop windows are
already adorned with red-coloured bras, knickers and, for
the first time this month, red boxer shorts. "Forget Valentine's
Day. Exam time underwear is the big seller at the moment.
And if it works for the girls it should work for the boys
too. We have already had quite a few sales for the red boxer
shorts," spokesman at one lingerie store in central Warsaw
,was quoted as saying.
