Soon, elephant-sized squids will rule the world (Go To Top)

London: Let your imagination run wild, with a world without human beings and ruled by elephant-sized squid and sheep- sized rodents. Well, the BBC in a new TV series has generated this bizarre vision of Earth. According to The Independent, the BBC is hoping its 5m series "The Future Is Wild" will echo the success of its prehistoric epic "Walking With Dinosaurs" which had 17 million viewers when it was shown in 1999. A team of 15 scientists took four years to make the 13-part series, which uses computer-generated images to explore the development of the Earth over the next 200 million years.

The show, to be shown on BBC2 this autumn, has already proved a ratings success in the US where it was made. "Scientists believe that in over 200 million years, all continents will move together into one big landmass, so Antarctica will move nearer to the equator and turn into rainforest," said John Adams, the independent producer who devised the concept seven years ago. "Birds will have disappeared and fish will fill the airspace; not like today's flying fish but fish that have developed wing muscles and live above the ocean and in forest environments", Adams noted.

Another of the series' creations is an eight-ton squid, the size of an elephant that can walk on land. When "The Future Is Wild" was shown in the US, it doubled the previous record ratings for the Animal Planet channel, owned by the Discovery Communications cable giant. Broadcasters in Germany, Spain and Japan have also bought the series. A book of the series, which has already been published in 18 languages, goes on sale in Britain this year.

Experts opined that just walking instead of taking the car or playing active games with children can help. A new study has revealed that three in four women and three in five men do not take enough exercise. The agency believes there is an urgent need to make people exercise more, as increasing levels of obesity risk growing levels of cardiovascular disease and other forms of ill health. The experts have advised people to take to the stairs or walk up escalators, play active games with children, dancing or gardening and getting active in the bedroom.
