Indian cricket team arrives in Pakistan (Go To Top)

Lahore/New Delhi: India's cricket team was given a rousing welcome at Allama Iqbal International Airport here today by officials of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the public. According to the Geo news channel, the PCB, the Lahore District Cricket Association and officials of the West Punjab provincial government, accorded the 15-member squad led by Sourav Ganguly. Special security measures were taken at the Allama Iqbal Airport, Lahore and surrounding areas ahead of the team's landing, the first to come to Pakistan on nearly 15 years. The team will play its only first class fixture in the run-up to its five one-day internationals with Pakistan in Lahore tomorrow. The first one-day international will take place at Karachi's National Stadium on March 13.

Earlier in New Delhi, the team called on Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee before embarking on its historic tour to Pakistan. During the brief interaction, Vajpayee told the members of the team to play with their hearts and to win friends. The Indian team presented an autographed cricket bat to the Prime Minister, and in return received a cricket bat with a short encouraging message from Vajpayee.

Talking to reporters before the team's departure, Ganguly said that the team had been adequately briefed by the officials of the Home and External Affairs Ministries about what to do or not to do during their month-and-half-long tour. He also said that the team was going with the objective of focussing on the game. "The tour has not yet started. So, it is difficult for me to answer this question (of well prepared the team was for the tour). But the first and foremost thing is to play the game, and so we will do our best there (Pakistan)," Ganguly said. "Whenever we travel, we travel as ambassadors of the country. But honestly, we all know that an India-Pakistan game is different than travelling to the rest of the world," he further said, adding that both teams had new faces and the forthcoming series could tilt either way.

For the record, India's performance in Pakistan is nothing to write home about. It has lost five Tests and drawn 15 since cricket was first played between the two countries in 1952-53. The last time the two countries played each other in both Pakistan and India, Pakistan won the Asia Cup friendship series 2-1. Ganguly, however, said that the performances of the past were now a part of cricket folklore. "We hope to keep up our good performance of the last year-and-half," he said. Of the present squad, only Sachin Tendulkar has taken part in a full-fledged tour of Pakistan in 1989-90, his debut series.

Two militants holed up in Srinagar bldg shot dead (Go To Top)

Srinagar: Security forces killed two militants hiding in a government building after an overnight shootout in Srinagar on Wednesday. Two soldiers were also wounded when the militants stormed the building in Lal Chowk. They threw grenades and fired at a security detail guarding the building where the information departments of the Central and the Jammu and Kashmir governments are located, before being holed up inside the complex. The building was gutted as security forces launched grenade and mortar rockets to neutralise the militants. "Yesterday night at around 18.45 p.m. two militants entered the PIB (Press Information Bureau) office and attacked the security guards and injured the soldiers. Later they were holed up inside the building. The building was burnt and we killed both the militants. One was killed last night and the other was killed early this morning," Mohammad Amin Shah, a deputy inspector general of police in Kashmir, said after the encounter ended early on Wednesday.

The area, Srinagar's main business centre, was deserted except for soldiers swarming the streets. Roads leading to the area have been sealed off. Al-Mansurin, a militant group that has claimed responsibility for several attacks in the past, said it had carried out Tuesday's attack. In a message to local newspapers, the group said it had launched a suicide attack because the state's governor said on Monday that such attacks had stopped in the Kashmir valley.

Four killed, 42 injured in grenade blast (Go To Top)

Badgam (J-K): A gunman trying to kidnap a villager in the Kashmir Valley threw a grenade at a crowd trying to stop him, killing four people and wounding 42 on Wednesday. Residents said the Tuesday evening attack to the west of Srinagar, was carried out by a renegade Muslim militant supporting security forces. Authorities said they had not established the attacker's identity. "Yesterday night there was an incident in Varvan village in Badgam where one militant barged into a house for extortion. The house owner retaliated and they were able to nab the militant. But the militant threatened to take off the pin of the grenade in his hands as a result of which all of them would be injured. But people did not leave him. Then the militant lobbed the grenade. Three of the injured later succumbed to their injuries", said Mohammad Amin Shah, Deputy Inspector General of Police.

Maoist rebels blast Jehanabad rail cabin, track (Go To Top)

Jehanabad: Maoist rebels late on Tuesday night blew up a railway track and a platform cabin in Jehanabad district. Police said around 50 extremists of the banned People's War Group (PWG) reached the north cabin taking captive two attendents and blasted the building, razing it to the ground. Minutes after the attack, the rebels blew up the railway track as well. A 25 KW overhead power transmission line was also damaged in the twin blasts leaving several trains running across Bihar stranded. Police said the blasts were so massive that the window panes of the district magistrate's residence, situated nearby, were also damaged. "Around 40 to 50 rebels of People's War Group forcibly entered the cabin and dragged out both the cabin attendants. They completely destroyed the cabin and damaged this rail track as well. They were shouting pro- PWG slogans," Gopal Singh Bhaduria, deputy superintendent of police, railways, said.

Besides PWG, the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) and a faction of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) are the other groups operating mainly in Bihar, neighbouring Jharkhand, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. The Naxalites, who are fighting for peasents' rights and radical re-distribution of land, have targeted rich landowners and government offices.

Shekhawat's nephew, JK Jain join Congress (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Pratap Singh `Kachhariawas', the nephew of Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and a prominent BJP leader in Rajasthan, joined the Congress here on Thursday. In- charge of the party affairs in Rajasthan, Mohsina Kidwai introduced Singh to the party. Speaking on the occasion, Singh, a former president of the BJP state unit and president of Rajasthan University, said that the present BJP government in Rajasthan had failed to fulfill the promises it had made to the public before the last assembly elections.

Meanwhile, another prominent politician in the Capital, Dr J.K. Jain, the chief of Jain Television, also joined the party. A former BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member, Jain expressed willingness for contesting Lok Sabha election on Congress ticket. "If the party will ask me to contest, I will surely follow the order," he added. Jain, who remained aloof from active politics during the past three years, parried questions as to why he severed his relations with the BJP. "I don't want to make any personal comments regarding anybody in BJP," he said while replying to a query if he left BJP only after he had unleashed a tirade against Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra.

High Court bar on RSS shakhas in public places (Go To Top)

Nagpur: The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court in an interim order has directed the Nagpur Municipal Corporation to prevent free use of public places by any institutions or socio cultural organisations. Ruling on a petition filed by a social worker Vijay Talewar, Justices J N Patel and Bhushan Gavai barred the unauthorised use of the public places. The Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) which regularly uses parks and playgrounds for holding its shakhas will be affected by the order. The petitioner had pleaded that the unauthorised congregations in public places like those of the RSS, create hindrance for the general public who use them. Statutorily any body using public places for socio cultural functions or for comercial purposes has to pay user charges to the Municipal Corporation. The RSS opines that the High Court order cannot be applied to its holding of shakhas as they do not violate any laid norms. Earlier, the Himachal government had taken a serious note of holding of Shakhas in playgrounds. The then Mumbai mayor Jaishree Panwar was reported to have opposed the holding of Shakhas in parks.

Advani takes off on 'Bharat Uday Yatra' in spite of court hiccup (Go To Top)

Kanyakumari: Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani today took off on his two-phased 33-day 'Bharat Uday Yatra', his third over the past 14 years. Urging India's teeming masses to give a fresh mandate to the incumbent BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Advani told party faithful at this temple town that while he was confident about the alliance's return to power, he would be happy if it was given a resounding majority to carry forward its "good governance and development agenda." "This is a unique day in my life. Even otherwise, I have come to this southern-most tip of my country. But now, I feel elevated that my country is a great country. But, I also feel humble. I am a small person trying to do my best in what I can do for my country," Advani said. BJP President M Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the yatra in the presence of senior party leaders Pramod Mahajan, Arun Jaitley, Shahnawaz Hussain, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Arif Mohammed Khan and Prakash Javadekar.

A two-judge bench of the high court comprising Chief Justice B C Patel and Justice B D Ahmed dismissed the plea saying "it has been made clear to us that they (petitioner) had already approached the Election Commission. Hence this court would not like to exercise its jurisdiction." Shyamdev Bhadana, the general secretary of Indian Trade Union Congress, had filed the petition. His counsel Arun Maitri told the court that the 'yatra' was violative of the Election Commission's model code of conduct as Advani was undertaking it in his official capacity as the country's Deputy Prime Minister. Bhadana also expressed apprehension about the yatra provoking communal violence. The high court bench, however, replied that every citizen of the country had a right to take out a procession and that Advani could be prevented from exercising this right only because he belonged to a ruling party or alliance.

Beginning from Kanyakumari, the yatra will end in the temple town of Puri in Orissa on April 14. Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will greet Advani at the end of his trip.

Round Two with Hurriyat likely on March 27 (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Talks between the Central Government and the leaders of a faction of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) are likely to take place again on March 27, in spite of a verbal threat by the latter to withdraw from the dialogue process over the former not doing much to address rights-related issues in Kashmir. Informed sources said that the Hurriyat leaders would meet in Srinagar next week to take a final decision on holding parleys with the Government. Union Home Ministry sources said that Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, currently involved with his "Bharat Uday Yatra", would be returning to New Delhi on March 26 and the talks could be held the very next day before he moves to Gujarat for filing his nomination papers for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls. The Hurriyat's concerns about human rights violation seemed to have dissipated after the Centre issued strict instructions to ensure that the rights of civilians are respected. The first round of talks was held on January 22.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans take freedom march to Delhi (Go To Top)

New Delhi: Hundreds of exiled Tibetans holding a month-long "Freedom March" to highlight the human rights violation in Chinese-ruled Tibet, reached New Delhi on Wednesday on their Uprising Day. Wednesday marks the 45th anniversary of an abortive, bloody uprising against the Chinese communist rule. Chinese troops marched into Tibet in 1950 and the Dalai Lama, Tibet's spiritual leader, fled into exile in India with thousands of his followers nine years later after the unsuccessful revolt against communist rule. Every year, the March 10 anniversary is marked by widespread protests and burning of effigies of Chinese leaders across India. This year a month-long special freedom march was started from Dharamsala town, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile, to observe the day. Hundreds of Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) activists alongwith old men nd women, marched into the capital to register their protest. Eighty monks and children from 70 Tibetan schools across India were part of the 535-kilometre-long trail which traversed Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana before reaching New Delhi.

Tough battle ahead for Biju Janata Dal (Go To Top)

Bhubaneswar: Orissa's ruling party Biju Janata Dal (BJD) seems to be facing a tough electoral battle in Bhubaneswar ahead of the April polls. The state has opted for simultaneous assembly polls along with national elections to be held on April 20 and 26. BJD is an ally of the federal ruling Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party. The BJD-BJP alliance, which swept 19 of the total 21 parliamentary seats in the 1999 general election, is finding the going tough as the common voters say the lawmakers do not keep their word. "Last time they have not promised anything concrete. No one here keep their promises. We have not seen our local leader even for a long time, and forget about our member of Parliament, lawmaker. He comes only when he needs our votes," Fakir, a villager said. The Congress party, which was almost wiped off in the 1999 election, has made non-evelopment an election issue.

"The most important problem of the slum dwellers must be looked after. We cannot just wish them away. There has to be a cautious effort from the government and the local representatives to resettle them and to assure them they are a part of the city," Soumya R. Patnaik, state chief of the Congress party, said. Prasanna Kumar Patasani of the BJD, who had won the seat with a massive majority, blamed the previous Congress party-led government for lack of development. "This is not the fault of our government. Previously, the government which ruled for 15 years, the money allotted for endorsement was 1000 crores (10 billion rupees) for 1,000 days. That was announced. But with that money, not a single industry is installed, beause of the lack of electricity, communication. How will any industrialist be interested?" Patasani asked.

The Bhubaneswar constituency has more than 1.3 million voters. The BJD turfed out the Congress party in the election that followed the 1998 super cyclone, which devastated the state. The BJD won 68 of the total 147 seats in the Assembly election, the BJP got 38 while the Congress party won 26 seats. Analysts say that though the state may witness a tough contest, the BJP-BJD alliance, riding on the popularity of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is likely to gain over the faction-ridden Congress party.

Govt hoardings to be removed soon: I and B Ministry (Go To Top)

New Delhi: The Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Pawan Chopra on Wednesday said that government hoardings and billboards highlighting the achievements of the ruling party would very soon be removed. He, however, did not specify any time frame. "We have already started working on this and the election commission would soon be informed about the compliance of its orders," Chopra told reporters on the sidelines of the release of a handbook on the general elections 2004 prepared by the Press Information Bureau. The Election Commission had on Tuesday asked the Central and state governments to remove hoardings and advertisements displaying achievements of the ruling parties at the cost of the public exchequer. Although the government had stopped the India shining campaign which was liberally being shown on all TV and radio stations the day the election dates were announced, the removal of horadings put up at across the length and breadth of the country is yet to be complied with. Such hordings violate the model code of Conduct which comes into force as soon as the election dates are announced.

Khan, the 'biggest nuke proliferator ever': Powell (Go To Top)

Washington: Describing Pakistan's top nuclear scientist A.Q. Khan as the world's "biggest nuclear proliferator ever", U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said that President Musharraf's decision to pardon him was a well thought out strategy to get a better insight into his network. When he was specifically pinned down on this issue during the course of a television interview on Tuesday, Powell said: "No, we didn't ignore it at all. He was, perhaps, the biggest proliferator ever. He is not any more. And the U.S. provided information and intelligence to President Musharraf as to the nature of Dr. Khan's activities." "We worked with President Musharraf to make sure that all of these activities became public and were taken into account, and action was taken," Powell was further quoted by the Dawn, as saying.

Lahore catches cricket fever! (Go To Top)

Lahore: Excitement has gripped almost all of Lahore city even as preparations are being made for the last two one-day internationals between India and Pakistan to be played here. Despite the demolition drive, for security reasons, the locals are in high spirits as they look forward to the upcoming series, a report in the Daily Times said Wednesday. On Monday the stalls, shops and kiosks around the Gaddafi Stadium were demolished as a security precaution. According to local officials, most streets would be closed to allow safe passage for the Indian visitors and all venues combed for explosive devices. Vendors in the Walled City said the tour of the Indians would be incomplete without a visit to Food Street. "We hope that the Indian visitors will enjoy our traditional hospitality," Muhammad Aslam, a shopkeeper in Anarkali, was quoted as telling an international news agency.

The local residents too are in an upbeat mood especially in the wake of developing relations between the two nations. Qasim Tiwana, a Lahore-based event manager, is happy to see ties between both countries improving. "I'm really looking forward to it," he said, adding "I'm sure they'll love our singers and the sights we have to offer, like the Old City and the Minar-e- Pakistan." Jalal Salahuddin, who also runs an event management company in Lahore, said: "I don't know if the Old City will be so exciting for them. They're coming from Delhi after all, not Australia." Salahuddin says the Indian team should be taken around to private homes so they can be shown "just how liberal Pakistan really is". Madeeha Gauhar of Ajoka Theatre Company suggested that the Indian team should play a match with street children. Besides, she said that the visiting team must attend the first Indo-Pakistan theatre festival her group has organised this month. "It's important for sports and cultural activists to show solidarity," she said.

According to reports, Islamabad has issued some 8200 visas to Indians, including 120 to Indian journalists. A wire service reported that hotels in the city were completely booked and that their prices had shot up five times the usual rate. Quoting Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shahryar Khan, the report said that more than 2500 policemen would be on hand to provide security for the heads of state. "Neither the Pakistan nor the Indian team will be allowed to go anywhere except the grounds and their hotel," he reportedly said adding that entertainment for the visitors would be provided at their hotels. The paper further said that the extensive security arrangements across the city have done little to dampen the enthusiasm welling up Lahore. Though, around 16,000 tickets will be available for each of the Lahore matches, the report said that the PCB and the local government are planning to install giant television screens at Racecourse Park and the Minar-e-Pakistan to allow people who were unable to get tickets a chance to catch the games. Chief Secretary of the Punjab Kamran Rasool said the city government was looking into whether such screens could also be installed at other venues.

Connections don't work in getting tickets for a Indo-Pak match! (Go To Top)

Karachi: Tickets for the first one-day international between India and Pakistan, to be played here on Saturday, continued to be elusive even for the influential and well connected people of this city. Many top notch bureaucrats, high ranking officers of the police and rangers, former cricketers and other influential personalities could be seen pleading to get hold of some tickets, and that too on cash payment (not complimentary basis), said a report in the News on Wednesday. People who could normally be seen walking away with packets of complimentary tickets were seen running around the stadium seeking out the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials and the company selling the tickets, willing to purchase tickets at any cost, the report added.

According to the report, some threatening voices could be heard from the top-ranking police and rangers, senior civil servants and retired army officers or even a media representative warning of dire consequences on the telephone if they were not sold tickets. On the other hand, National Stadium manager Razaullah Khan was seen attending to phones or pleading with people in his room that he didn't have tickets. PCB GM (Cricket Operations) Zakir Khan was clearly fed up with the situation and holed out in the regional academy hostel to operate from there for the rest of the day. Other board officials and the ticket sellers were also seen running from one room into another to avoid the ticket seekers.

Gold Rolex reveals Monroe's passion for JFK! (Go To Top)

London: Marilyn Monroe's gift to former US President John F Kennedy on his 45th birthday reveals that there was much more than friendship between the two of them. A gold Rolex inscribed "Jack, With love as always from Marilyn, May 29th, 1962", which was given to the President by the blonde bombshell on his birthday is now on the auction block, with a price tag of 2.5 million pounds, reports Hello magazine. The watch, encased in a gold box embossed with a poem entitled, 'A Heartfelt Plea On Your Birthday', seems to provide yet more testimony that Marilyn shared more than a fleeting friendship with the iconic leader. The passionate verse inside, which begins, "Let lovers breathe their sighs", ends with the phrase, "And let me love or let me die". Perhaps unsurprisingly, upon receiving the Rolex, the married JFK seemingly passed it to a trusted aide with instructions to "Get rid of it". The report adds that the website, which is selling the timepiece, MomentsInTime.com, includes a letter from the son of the staff member in question. Entitled 'The Unwanted Gift', the note reads, "This watch was given to my late father in 1962... As a trusted and well respected member of the White House staff, my father was privy to much sensitive and potentially embarrassing information including the liaison dangereux with Marilyn Monroe."

I tried it once and hated it." Due to give birth to her first baby this summer, Heidi's keeping mum on her future modelling plans. However, even if she doesn't make a quick return, she'll certainly have plenty to keep her busy work-wise. Not only does she design a collection of baubles for jewellery firm Mouwad, she's also created her own line for shoe company Birkenstock, the report adds.
