Soft drinks destroy your tooth enamel (Go To Top)

Washington: The sale of soft drinks increases by leaps and bounds in summer time but these carbonated beverages, especially non-cola drinks and canned ice tea is bad news for tooth enamel. A study of the effects of carbonated drinks, appearing in the July/August 2004 issue of journal 'General Dentistry' found that over time, exposing dental enamel to carbonated beverages weakens and permanently destroys enamel. The researchers said that carbonated drinks and canned ice contain flavor additives, such as malic, tartaric and other organic acids, which are more aggressive at eroding teeth. The study noted that about 27 percent of the beverages consumed by Americans are soft drinks and its consumption has increased over the years. J. Anthony Von Fraunhofer, lead author of the study, said that soda consumed at meal times is less injurious than when consumed alone and continuous sipping is more harmful than the whole drink taken at one time. According to Dr. Cynthia Sherwood, soda's combination of sugar and acidity can be lethal to teeth. "Repeated exposure of soda through sipping over a long period of time increases the risk of getting a cavity," said Sherwood. Sherwood also said that drinking soda through a straw may help reduce the amount of soda that comes into direct contact with the teeth. She recommended that soda drinkers rinse their mouths out with water after drinking and use toothpaste that contains fluoride to save their enamel.
