'Spiderman-II' opens housefull across the country

New Delhi: The much-awaited Hollywood blockbuster "Spiderman-II" opened full houses across the country on Friday. Story of an investigative-journalist-turned-superhero, "Spiderman-II" follows the journey of Peter Parker, a boy-next- door who gets special powers to fight crime. Starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, the sequel shows Spiderman taking on the deranged quantam physicist Doctor Octavius, christened Doc Ock. The film, which clinched 60 million dollars in U.S. alone in the first week of its release, seems to be a superhit with movie-mad India.

"The movie was excellent, effects were brilliant. Right through the end we were thinking what will happen next. It's a good movie," said Abhishek Mukherjee, a movie buff. Rajinder Singh, head of Programming and Operations of Chanakya cinema, said all shows were running full. "The response is very good. Today all the shows are full in my hall. I am sure the next week would also be full. The response is very good," said Singh. Created by Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, John Romita and Jack Kirby in the 1960s, the comic strip featured in Amazing Fantasy magazine was a huge hit among children. Subsequently, the film version was also out in the early 70s. Maguire was roped in to play the lead role of the world's most enterprising arachnid who goes scuttling onwards, leaping from 80-storey Manhattan towers and battling New York's giveaway-named villains in 2001 in the first part of the film which clinched 150 million dollar worldwide. Maguire said the best part of playing the superhero was being admired by children. "The cool thing about being Spiderman for me is that my fans are kids, and because I love kids, so that is what I love about it...It doesn't get really tiresome when people come up to me, because generally they are little people, there are children coming up to me and it is fun," said Maguire. Reports say Maguire has already been paid a huge amount for the third part of the film.
