Dawood funding Salem's expenses, reveals CBI

          New Delhi: The CBI has revealed that Dawood Ibrahim is funding the legal expenses of his companion Abu Salem involved in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, and currently jailed in Portugal. This latest revelation shatters the rumours that following Salem's arrest in Lisbon two years back there was a vertical split in the D-company and, Dawood was after Salem's life for "betrayal". The CBI too had initially started believing the rumours but later intensive interrogation of some underworld people deported from Dubai led CBI officials to the truth that the split between Dawood and Salem was stage-managed to divert police attention and that the entire legal funding of Salem in Portugal was being done by Dawood Ibrahim.

14 killed in road mishap near Tirupati (Go To Top)

          Tirupati: At least 14 people belonging to three families were killed and three seriously injured when their vehicle collided with a bus at Puthalpattu, about 60 km from Tirupati early Sunday. The three families consisting 16 members were going to offer prayers at the Lord Venkateswara temple near Tirupati. They had started the journey from Nagapattinam on Saturday night, local SP Gopalakrishna said. The bus was going from Tirupati to Tumkur in Karnataka. Among those injured were two children and a woman. They were first taken to the government hospital at Chittor from where they were referred to Christian Medical College, Vellore.

Sonia visits Kumbakonam fire survivors (Go To Top)

          New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi paid a visit to the surviving victims of Friday's school fire tragedy at Kumbakonam, here Sunday. After her arrival from Tiruchirapalli on a helicopter, she drove down to the government hospital, where the injured students were being treated. Apart from inquiring about the health of the injured students, she also met the parents of the victims. Thereafter, she visited the ill-fated school where the tragedy took place. On the occasion, Sonia also announced a compensation package of Rs one crore for the victims.

Vinay Katiyar resigns as UP BJP chief (Go To Top)

          Lucknow: Vinay Katiyar resigned as Uttar Pradesh BJP chief here Sunday. He took the decision after the party president Venkaiah Naidu reportedly asked him to quit the party "on health grounds". According to sources, Katiyar, who had initially refused to resign, is likely to be replaced by former UP speaker Kesarinath Tripathi. His removal is being seen as part of a larger BJP plan to revamp state party units across the country.
