Govt to amend Constitution for reservation in private sector (Go To Top)

New Delhi: The UPA government will soon bring in a constitutional amendment Bill to provide reservation for the backward classes in the private sector. Union Minister for Chemical, Fertiliser and Steel Ram Vilas Paswan said this here Thursday while interacting with the media. Speaking in a seminar organised by the Indian Institute of Dalit Studies, Paswan said that the erstwhile NDA regime has talked of extending reservation to the private sector. He said that the issue was included in the CMP of the UPA and in the President's speech and the government intends to amend the constitution soon.

"The government is committed to it. We will bring in a constitution amendment bill in the Parliament. Before that all parties will be consulted. But we will definitely bring it. Those who oppose it and talk of merit forget how the private schools charge thousands of rupees for admission. Or, how the rich get their wards into medical institutes by paying lakhs of rupees. We not only demand reservation in public and private sector but also one-third seats in private schools for backward classes," said Paswan. CPI secretary D Raja said that the representative of the private sector should come forward for a dialogue on the issue. "The CPI and the entire Left have demanded the extension of reservation to the private sector. Time has come for serious efforts to implement reservation in private sector. Private sector representatives should come forward for a meaningful dialogue. They can not simply say no," added D Raja. Many of the private companies have been opposing the proposed reservation in the private sector giving a go by to merit in recruitment.
