Arunachal legislators demand Governor's ouster

New Delhi: Arunachal Pradesh Members of Parliament landed in the Indian Capital this evening to press the Centre to remove the state's Governor, VC Pande. Congress MLAs from Arunachal Pradesh are on their way to Delhi to ask for his removal. "We have already prepared a memorandum and will ask the Rashtrapathiji to sack this Governor. Because the functioning of this Governor has gone against the interest of the state," said Mukut Mithi, a former state chief minister. The Congress legislators have accused Pande of helping Chief Minister Gegong Apang. Soon after dissolving the state Assembly, Pande had recommended President's Rule in the state. Then he did a complete turnaround, saying he had been forced by the Congress legislators to recommend President's Rule. Yesterday, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said that the Centre was keeping its options open about imposing President's Rule in the state. Meanwhile, BJP President M Venkaiah Naidu today urged the Election Commission to hold immediate elections in Arunachal Pradesh, where the dissolution of the Assembly has sparked off a controversy. "Our appeal to the Election Commission will be to hold immediate election in the state and allow the people to have a government of their choice," he told reporters in Guwahati. Naidu accused the Congress of "entertaining evil designs by contemplating to impose President's Rule in the state to come to power through the backdoor."

Party leaders and office bearers from all over the state are coming together in the meeting for the first time after the Lok Sabha elections. Shiv Sena leader Narayan Rane said: "Today the Congress government has become very unpopular. Take the example of Sangli, the worst affected among the districts that have been hit by drought and famine. The farmers don't get water, there is no electricity, there are no jobs. Farmers are oppressed, yet, why is it that we could not win any seats there? We need to discuss these issues," said Rane.
