BJP takes credit for economic boom (Go To Top)

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday took the credit for pushing the country on the path of economic boom. A strong "feel good" factor propelled by an expected over eight percent GDP growth rate, besides a morale boosting win in state polls in December, has prompted the BJP-led ruling coalition to gamble with an early national election. BJP spokesman Arun Jaitley said that their policies made Indian economy one of the fastest growing in the world. "Reserves are swelling. Currency is strong. Exports are growing. In service sector, the most powerful economy in the world, the U.S. is today feeling threatened by job cross overs to India. Even in manufacturing sector, there are now segments which are growing rapidly. And we believe, one of the principal reason why the economy got this fillip is because of the govenrment's, BJP's, particularly the Prime Minister's support behind the crucial economic decisions we have taken," Arun Jaitley told reporters in New Delhi.

On Thursday, chief of central bank predicted a strong growth for the Indian economy, Asia's third largest, for this year and next year. India, home to one-sixth of the world's population, is currently one of the world's fastest-growing economies after growing 8.4 percent between the third quarters of 2002 and 2003. The economy is now expected to expand by 8.1 percent in the year to March 2004, double the previous year. The Indian currency, long accustomed to annual depreciation against the dollar, rose for the first time in a decade in 2002, gaining 0.55 percent as investments poured into a robust economy. The economic growth and a "feel good factor" after abundant monsoon rains last year, made the BJP-led government to opt for an early election, eight months ahead of scheduled time.

The Election Commission is expected to announce the dates for the election this month. A recently held poll has predicted Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's BJP-led coalition would win 330-340 of the 543 seats at stake in the lower house of parliament. The coalition currently holds 303 seats. The opinion poll has also indicated that the Congress will suffer the worst drubbing in its 119-year- old history, winning just 105-115 seats in the elections expected sometime in April, down from the 140 it holds along with its allies at the moment.
