BOTTOMLINES

Leaning tower of Pisa does not lean anymore (Go To Top)

Washington: The leaning tower of Pisa has stopped leaning, thanks to scientists who have successfully stemmed its tilt and claim that the historic structure is now safe for another 300 years. According to Discovery News, experts, who have been debating on how to stop the tower from collapsing one day ever since it's construction was completed in 1350, have finally found the answer. They simply dug the sand on the other side of the tilt to settle the monument more evenly. The monument, which got it's tilt because of soft, sandy subsoil on which it was made, has now been straightened by half a degree, stabilising it for the first time in more than eight centuries. One of the seven wonders of the modern world, the tower had raised concerns when it was noticed that it had started tilting at the rate of more than one millimetre per year, due to which tourists had be banned from visiting the tourist attraction. To stop the tilt, more than 38 cubic metres of earth was removed and the tower was steadied by steel cables attached to the first tier and anchored to the ground. Scientists now aver that the tower is safe for the next 300 years.
