CBI chargesheets six more in gangrape case

          Ahmedabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday chargesheeted six more accused in the gangrape of a Muslim woman and murder of 14 of her family members during the religious violence in Gujarat in 2002. More than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, died in revenge killings after 59 Hindus were burned to death on a train by a Muslim mob. Bilkis Yaqoob, a key witness in the gangrape case, had alleged that a mob of 500 people had attacked them and at least three women, including his sister, were gangraped on March 3, 2002. Bano and her husband Yakoob Patel are the only survivors in the family of 16, the rest were burnt alive. The CBI had chargesheeted 14 accused late last year. The Supreme Court would hear the case on April 27.

Militant killed in Doda encounter (Go To Top)

         Doda: Security forces on Monday killed a militant along the ceasefire line in Kashmir. Police said the militant, belonging to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, was intercepted in Doda district, and killed after a three-hour fierce gunbattle. Police said the militant, identified as Abu Salfi, and one of his associates had taken refuge in a house in the village. Officials said 10 kgs RDX (Research Developed Explosive), one AK- 47 rifle, 56 live rounds, three magazines were also recovered from the slain militant. "We had cordoned this area by 3.30 p.m. and then only the militants started firing when the encounter started at 4.30 p.m. One militant, Abu Vikas Salfi was killed and he was a Lashkar-e- Taiba militant. We have seized one AK 47, three magazines and 60 rounds," Virender Sharma, Assistant Superintendent of Police in Doda, told reporters. Sharma said the militants wanted to disrupt the national polls beginning April 20. Militant groups and separatists have urged people to boycott the national polls.

Indo-Bangla border talks in Dhaka on April 28 (Go To Top)

         Dhaka: Giving a serious thought to the killings taking place on the porous Indo-Bangladesh borders, talks between chiefs of Bangladesh and Indian border security forces will take place here on April 28. According to Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) sources, the six-day talks will cover a wide range of issues. It is expected that the Bangladesh side will focus on cross-border insurgency, the illegal entry of Indian citizens into Bangladesh and to open the Teen Bigha Corridor. "Although incidents of killing in the border areas have reduced for the last couple of months, we will register our concerns with the Indian authorities," said a BDR officer.

Navy inducts T-84 (Go To Top)

         Chennai: The Indian Navy today inducted the Fast Attack Craft, T-84, equipped with the state-of-the-art structural, hydrodynamic and propulsion features. The vessel with a top speed of 45 knots was inducted in the presence of Vice-Admiral O P Bansal, Flag Officer Commanding-in- Chief, Eastern Naval Command, Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition J S Bedi and Goa Shipyard (GSY) Chairman and Managing Director Sampath Pillai. The third indigenous and the fifth ship of its class, the aluminum hull craft is designed in such a way that it can be put at sea at a very short notice for performing a range of tasks such as surveillance, reconnaissance and beach insertion and extraction of commando forces. Fitted with the MK-20 naval stabilized gun system, electro-optic detection system and sophisticated armaments, the craft is propelled by two MTU engines, which drive two ''articulated surface drive'' and ''surface piercing propellers.'' The ship is equipped with sophisticated sensors and a weapon suite of two 20 mm Oerlikon guns, typhoon and fire control systems, multi-sensor stabilized integrated system with forward looking infra-red sensors and laser ranging that can identify and locate a person standing at a distance of two km under pitch dark conditions.

Maradona critical, kept in ICU (Go To Top)

          Washington: The all-time great Argentina soccer star Diego Maradona was admitted to a clinic after he complained of high blood pressure. His condition is said to be critical, and has been kept in an intensive care unit (ICU) of a Buenos Aires hospital. He was reportedly breathing with the help of a respirator and his condition was "reserved". Meanwhile, a TV report had claimed that Maradona had fallen ill after taking a drug overdose. But the report could not be confirmed.
