Davis Cup: Paes wins singles tie

          Osaka: Japan's Gouichi Motomura recovered from a slow start to beta Prakash Amritraj, while India's Leander Paes cruised to victory as the two nations split the singles matches of their Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group One clash today. Motomura defeated Prakash Amritraj 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 in the first match to give Japan the lead. But India bounced back in the second singles match when Paes defeated Takao Suzuki 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. The doubles matches will be played on Saturday the reverse singles matches on Sunday. The winner of the tie will advance to September's playoff ties for the World Group.

Injured Moin, Razzaq out of Pindi Test (Go To Top)

          Lahore: Wicketkeeper Moin Khan and all-rounder Abdul Razzaq are out of the third and final Test against India starting in Rawalpindi from April 13. A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesman said both players were suffering from injuries, which would not heal before the third Test, the News reported. Moin is suffering from a groin injury while Razzaq had a back strain, which had also forced them to miss the second Test in Lahore. The squad for the Test is as follows: Inzamam-ul-Haq (Capt), Imran Farhat, Taufeeq Umar, Yasir Hameed, Yousuf Youhana, Asim Kamal, Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Shoaib Akhtar, Muhammad Sami, Shabbir Ahmed, Umar Gul, Danish Kaneria, Imran Nazir and Misbah- ul-Haq.

Shoaib doesn't like green tops (Go To Top)

          Lahore: Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar apparently doesn't like green tops, preferring hard and dry wickets. Talking to Online News after Pakistan's nine wicket victory over India in the Lahore Test on Thursday, Shoaib said he was partially satisfied with his performance, and added that had there been a hard and dry surface, India could have been knocked over for 150 runs. "I have four wickets to my name in the second Test yet I am not fully satisfied with my performance," the Pakistani speedster said.

          Lahore: Now that the Pakistan-India series is levelled one all, the Pakistan team must show the determination and keenness to wrap the series up at Rawalpindi, said the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Shaharyar M Khan. "I hope players will be giving their best in the coming game which is very important as the series is locked at 1-1 and outcome of it depends on the that match," Khan said. Expressing his delight over Pakistan's 9 wicket win in the second Test here, Khan was quoted by the Nation as saying, "Victory is always good and beating India is special and I am very happy with the performance and wish them good luck." "There were good performances in the Test, opener Imran Farhat played a brilliant knock, captain Inzamam ul Haq rose in the role of a leader and young Umer Gul impressed with his bowling," he added. "I must say that Umer gave a very special performance and was rightly judged man of the match and I expect that he would be a big support to the side in future," he said.

18-member squad for Australia tourneys (Go To Top)

          New Delhi: The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) on Friday sprang a surprise by naming a few unheralded players for the forthcoming twin tournaments in Australia this month in the lead up to the Olympic Games in Athens. Several senior players including Dhanraj Pillay and Baljit Singh Dhillon were not included in the 18-member squad, which will play two tournaments in Canberra and Sydney from April 14 to 18 and Apr 21 to 25 respectively. "Players like Pillay and Dhillon are vastly experienced and so they can join the team at any moment. The move to give the youngsters a chance in Australia is aimed at giving them exposure before the Olympics," chief coach Rajinder Singh told news agency here.
