West Bengal panchayat election violence

          Kolkata, May 16: The Bengal panchayat election has claimed three lives with the death of a BJP worker at Samudragar in Bardhaman district. The victim was hacked to death, allegedly by CPI(M) activists, on Thursday, according to official sources. This apart, about 100 people were injured in clashes between the supporters of the CPI(M) and the Congress and between the CPI(M) and the Trinamool Congress(AITC) in several districts after election results were out. Earlier on Wednesday, two activists - one each from the CPI (M) and the Congress - were killed and ten injured in Raghunathgunje and Suti areas of Murshidabad district.

Union Cabinet reshuffle

          New Delhi, May 16: The Union Cabinet may by reshuffled during the weekend after next. New faces are likely to be inducted, according to sources. There is already speculation that Trinamul Congress leader Mamata Banerjee and former Union minister Shanta Kumar may be re-inducted.

Warrant against Shilpa's parents

          New Delhi, May 16: The parents of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty have been issued a non-bailable warrant by a court in Surat. The two allegedly have connections with the underworld, according to a TV channel. It reported that they sought the help of a man called Fazlur Rahman, belonging to the criminal class, to recover money due on Parag Saree manufacturers. Police from Surat have reached Mumbai to execute the warrant. At this moment, Shilpa's mother is with her at Johannesburg, South Africa, to attend a Bollywood awards function, but the police feel that her father SD Shetty is in India.

Punjab judge applies for bail (Go To Top)

          Chandigarh, May 16: Jalandhar's first class judicial magistrate S.S. Bhardwaj, who is absconding and currently under suspension following allegations of corruption against him, has moved a lower court here seeking anticipatory bail, it was reported on Friday. Bhardwaj, who filed the bail application on Thursday, pleaded that he was "falsely implicated" in the case.

           Meanwhile, Jalandhar district and sessions Judge R.M. Gupta moved the lower court seeking lesser number of days in police remand. In his application, Gupta alleged that the CBI had forced him to name senior judicial officers as party to the issue. The CBI had registered a case against the duo on May 9 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Its sleuths acted on a written complaint filed by Gurvinder Singh Samra who alleged that Bhardwaj was demanding a bribe of Rs 7 lakh. While Gupta was remanded to police custody till Friday, Bhardwaj escaped from custody shortly after his arrest. His counsel, however, contended that his client was not absconding.

Sanjay, Salman for world tour (Go To Top)

          Mumbai, May 16: Fans of Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan will now have the opportunity to watch the two actors in real life rather than on the big screen. They have appeared together in films like 'Saajan' and 'Chal Mere Bhai' and this time around they have signed to appear in a world tour titled 'Jalwa 2003'. Before committing himself to the event, Sanjay Dutt was forced to ask a special court in India for permission to leave the country. Other stars who will also take part in the tour include Bobby Deol, Bipasha Basu and Amisha Patel. The group will tour US, Canada and UK in May and June.
