New Delhi: India displayed the latest and the best of its military hardware at a full dress rehearsal of the Republic Day parade here on Sunday. The weapons and planes -- ranging from battle tanks to missiles - were displayed at a spectacular show. Although it was only a dress rehearsal, the parade at Raj Path was a near replica of the January 26 parade, projecting India's military prowess as well as its rich and diverse cultural heritage. Also displayed were models of Brahmos and Prithvi missiles, radio trunk systems, satellite communication systems and improved radars. The celebration concluded with a flypast by Air Force fighters and transport aircraft. pilotless aircraft 'Lakshya' (Target), deep penetration strike aircraft 'Jaguar' and Mig-27 fighters featured in the air force contingent. Mechanised columns included Arjun", the main battle tank, T-72 tanks, 105 mm field guns and Tunguska mounts. The cross-section of the Army taking part in the parade consisted of one
mounted column,
12 marching contingents besides armoured, artillery and engineers depicting
equipment in service. As many as 27 tableaux from various states and public
undertakings showing their regional cultural heritage and developmental
projects also featured in the parade. The parade also included children's
pageant, national bravery award winning children on elephants, motorcycle
ride by daredevils and contingents from para-military and other services. |
