Shimla: Ramdayal Baba, a holyman, has been on his feet for over two years at the Chamunda temple in northern Himachal Pradesh. Devotees say Baba is observing penance for the well being of humanity. "He doesn't sit at all, it has been two-and-a-half years that he has been standing. He comes out, does his daily routine and goes back inside the temple and stands," Rajesh, a visitor to the temple in the picturesque Kangra valley, said. Curious visitors make a stopover at the temple just to catch a glimpse of the standing godman called sadhu in local parlance.
The temple is dedicatedto Goddess Chamunda, who the locals believe possess the ability to grant desires and fulfil wishes. Baba, hopes to construct three small temples for devotees of Shani Dev (Saturn God), Hindu monkey God - Hanuman and Lord Ganesh. "Whatever I get as donations, I use it to build small temples. I plan to make two more temples including that of Ganesh," he said.
Sadhus are mystic holy men who have renounced all worldly belongings in
the search of enlightenment and lead a life of celibacy. Most sadhus lead
a nomadic life making pilgrimages across the nation. But some put themselves
through severe penances. References: Indian holy
