Manali: Snowfall in Kullu and Manali has broken all the records of the last 25 years. The region has recieved heavy snowfall of about 4 feet during the last five days Areas in and around Manali like Solang Nala and Bahang have recorded 5 to 7 feet of snowfall. The region has been witnessing heavy snowfall for the past two weeks, bringing the minimum temperature to minus 12 degrees in several areas, resulting in bursting of water pipes. The Kullu-Manali national highway opened on Wednesday (February 9) but in the afternoon was again blocked due to landslides at Patlikul and some other places. Situated 2310 metres above sea level, Manali has always been a favourite destination of tourists and filmmakers ecause of its pristine beauty. Though heavy snow and avalanche warnings left many tourist spots deserted a few weeks ago, still many head to the valley. "We want to spend at least a month here. We have come here so many
times but never got to see the snowfall.
It has been snowing since the last three days and we are enjoying very
much," said Maninder, a tourist. "It was in 1982-83 that this kind of
snowfall happened and now after so many years record breaking snowfall
has occurred. The number of tourists has increased and it will keep on
increasing", said Raghunath Sood, a local. "I am seeing the snowfall for
the first time. We are enjoying very much, I can't express in words."
said Vikas, another tourist. The snowfall is also supposed to be good
for the apple crop. The met department has predicted that the situation
might not improve for some more days. |
