Lonavala: A couple in Maharashtra took their love to a new high when they decided to bond in matrimony suspended in mid-air, literally. The groom, Ashirwad Ayre, and his bride Bharti Patil, both 28, performed an extraordinary wedding on Sunday, by tying the nuptials at 2,000 ft in the air, hung from steel wires between two peaks at Lonavala in Maharashtra's Pune district. Harnessed to a rope, the groom moved towards the centre of the gap from Duke's Nose while his bride came from Duchess Peak even as a priest, suspended from another rope, conducted the ceremony. An assortment of people, not just relatives but also locals gathered below to witness the unique spectacle unfold. Thrilled to bits with this elevated experience, the newly-weds, also members of a local trekking club, were prompted by the thought of doing something adventurous.
"I have
been trekking since my childhood and I desired to do something different
and I finally got the opportunity today. When my husband discussed the
idea of getting married on the mountain, I immediately agreed. This is
different from other marriages and will be a memorable one," said Bharti
Patil, the bride. If the priest conducting the ceremony was nervous, he
did not let it show as he chanted the wedding mantras bonding the adventurous
couple. "I arrived here in the morning and they trained me for half an
hour on the rope. I was kept suspended in mid-air for around 15 minutes
and so my fear subsided," said the priest Sudheer D. Khare. The marriage
was organised by "Dhumketu Trekkers", an adventurous group based in Mumbai.
The group prepared for over 20 days to set things up. |
