Goa is at its romantic best

Panaji: People visiting Goa have something more to experience other than the sun-soaked beaches. A large number of domestic and foreign tourists flock the "Riviera of the East" to witness heavy rains in the summer, at a time when the northern part of India reels under a heat wave. Visitors say that the state is at its romantic best during the monsoon as they could laze around, listening to the pitter-patter of raindrops on the thatched roofs of huts made specially for the tourists.

"It is different to visit Goa during the rainy season. The waves, beautiful climate.. everything is really good here. Everybody comes in the peak seasons but one should also come here now. This is really good," Mukthar Natwar, a tourist, said. Shakir, another tourist, felt that rains in Goa were different from that of other parts of the country as one could enjoy it in the backdrop of nice beaches and greenery. "There is a difference between the rains here than in Mumbai. The rains here have a cooling effect and enjoyable," said Shakir.

The southwest or summer monsoon arrived early and brought plentiful rainfall in Kerala and Goa and other parts of India's peninsular region. The met officials in Goa said the downpour will continue for two more days. "Till now we have recorded 25 centimetre rainfall in Goa and we believe heavy rainfall will continue for two more days. There will be a good monsoon as was in the previous year," K.V.Singh, Director, Meterological department of Goa, said. Monsoons, though vital for the Indian economy, have so far been a wet blanket for the tourism industry dropping hotel and resort occupancies by nearly 50 per cent and nose diving revenues for travel and tour operators servicing the domestic segment. However, buffeted by a series of setbacks in the past couple of years with an adverse effect on the inbound market, the tourism industry has been strategisisng at marketing the monsoon in an effort to project India as a year round tourism product.

The air was so fresh and full of fragrance that it was a different experience," said S.K. Aggarwal, a tourist. "It is a very good change from the usual routine. We get to see new things. I was a bit afraid while on safari but I enjoyed very much," said Aishwarya, a tourist from Delhi.

D S Khati, Director of the national park said that the number of tourists had increased and accordingly they have provided better facilities for them in the park. "The influx of tourists domestic as well as international is very high. Since the summer holidays have started, there are more tourists. We are providing the best possible facilities to the tourists," Khati said. Located at the foothills of the Himalayas, the national park was established under "Project Tiger" in 1973. During the monsoon season the roads in the park are in a bad state so the entry for the tourists is restricted. Dhikala zone in the park will remain closed from the 15th of June because of the monsoon season. Apart from tigers, the park is also home to leopards, jungle cat, fishing cat, tuskers, crocodiles and gharials.
